JamesBonz Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 Long story short, bought Tamiya Subaru Impreza WRC 2001 kit and I snapped the rear windshield in half. It's driving me crazy, is there anyway to repair (I assue impossible) What other avenue's do I have, the rear windshield is the one with the ###### lines through it so an acetate page will look foolish. Would it be feesable to order a new clear sprue set from Tamiya? I spent 33 bucks on this kit, i sure as hell dont want to spend 20 more on a new clear sprue set. Any help would be amazingly appriciated. Thanks in advance.
Phil Patterson Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 Your best shot at a temporary repair at least would be to fit the broken pieces together, then put a drop of liquid cement like Ambroid or Tenax at either end and let the liquid flow into the seam. A line will probably still show, but either of those 2 liquid glues won't cloud or haze the plastic "glass" like tube or super glue. It's worth a shot at least until you can find a replacement, depending on how hard the car would be to get back apart after completion.
Mr. Can Am Garage Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 Tamiya USA does do replacement parts IIRC. I don't know if they charge. Seeing as I live in Canada, I have to deal with the Canadian importer and I've never had to do so.

A friend has Testors clear parts cement and window maker stuff, would that be suitable?

BTW, I do suggest that you try the Canadian importer/distributor (Borgfeldt). I know they did do replacement parts for a Revell Germany airplane that I built years ago. Borgfeldt is on the web. http://www.borgfeldt.ca/

Harry P. Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 You can make new glass with clear acetate and scribe the defroster lines with an exacto.
jbwelda Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 since its available as a replacement part i would definately recommend that, but ive restored unobtainium clear plastic pieces a couple of times with pretty good results. first ive dipped them in future floor wax to avoid the fogging that will be coming from the super glue i attempt to flow into the crack after the future had dried. this sort of assumes a pretty good break, by "good" i mean it can be fitted back together with few obvious gaps or anything. then i let that dry very well, a day at least, maybe strip off the future with ammonia, and then sand on the crack that remains with descending grits of polishing stick, down to the 12000 level. at that point the crack has pretty much disappeared. adding a coat or two of meguires or novus plastic polish will complete it. as i said i have personally repaired at least two windshields like this, and in the case of one of them i never thought it possible but was totally amazed what i managed in a couple hours. but if i could get a replacement part, would i do it? i sure would do it!
