Shelby 427 1965 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Revell's Mk.2 Golf kit. I'm buying a real one in about a years time or so, so this'll be how I want mine. Interior started and mocked, still needs more work obviously. That infamous grille: Bumpers: The wheels, stolen from a Layton House Fujimi Mercedes 190E Cosworth: And I've done something that I don't believe I've seen on a Mk.2 model before, but that's mostly because I haven't really looked Sunroof! Anyways, these are veeeeeeery early days yet. This is gonna be a slow build, I want it to be perfect, plus exams are coming up now, but then I'll have aaaall summer to work on it. Thanks for looking, all comments appreciated!
o-man Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Watching intently. I've got that and the tuner version in the closet. What color are you going to paint it or are you going to polish the plastic?
Shelby 427 1965 Posted May 1, 2013 Author Posted May 1, 2013 Hey, I'm painting it Tamiya Mica Red, hopefully as close as I can get to VW's Tornado Red. I plan on having it as close as I can get to this: Only not as low. Well, it's the inspiration anyway, it mightn't be the same!
PowerPlant Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Interesting Looks good so far, except the headlight lenses are a bit askew... And, if you're going to be ordering those 16'' BBS RS wheels from Scale Production, you might also want to consider this: http://www.scaleproduction.de/product_info.php?info=p177_v-w-golf-2-gl-bumpers--revell-.html
Shelby 427 1965 Posted May 1, 2013 Author Posted May 1, 2013 Cheers! I was going to get the wheels... but that is just waaaaaaay out of my price league, as are the bumpers. Guess I'll just have to make do!
o-man Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 These are close and much cheaper. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390586680683
Shelby 427 1965 Posted May 1, 2013 Author Posted May 1, 2013 Yeah, I had been checking them out, but I was worried about size in scale. Golfs tend to have 15s in real life, I think 17s might be a touch too big... But thank you for the suggestion.
o-man Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Yeah, I had been checking them out, but I was worried about size in scale. Golfs tend to have 15s in real life, I think 17s might be a touch too big... But thank you for the suggestion. If you like, I can try to take a picture of them in the fenderwell of my Golf. Was going to use them there, or on my Fujimi CRX
o-man Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Pics as promised. Last photo shows width difference of tires. Personally, I think the BBS style look WAY better.
Zarana-X Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Looks good so far. The grill emblem on GTIs are black. At least on the old ones, anyway.
VW Dave Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Hey, I'm painting it Tamiya Mica Red, hopefully as close as I can get to VW's Tornado Red. Mica red is a fine metallic, while OE VW Tornado red is not...but the mica will look good on it with those BBS's regardless. Jason's right as well, the VW badge on all the Mk2 GTIs were black, while the standard Golfs had chrome ones
Shelby 427 1965 Posted May 3, 2013 Author Posted May 3, 2013 Thanks for the pics! Personally, I still think them a bit too big. I'll probably stick to the wheels I have. And thanks for the tips, I'll probably change the badge back to black. It won't be 100% accurate, because I'm gonna be using some artistic licencing. Cheers!
Shelby 427 1965 Posted May 4, 2013 Author Posted May 4, 2013 Quick update. Horribly failed at making a 1/24 CB... Oh well. Cheers!
PowerPlant Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 I like the touch with the Dark Side of the Moon CD on the dash
Shelby 427 1965 Posted May 10, 2013 Author Posted May 10, 2013 Cheers! I've added a couple of Queens of the Stone Age ones too, I'll have more pics another time. For now, though... Body paint work is all finished. I mocked up the chassis and... the wheels are too big. I'm gonna have to sort it. I've a rough idea how.
o-man Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Looks great. How did you do the tail lights? Are you going to use the wheels or something else?
Onzatrip Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Loving the look of it, what are you doing about the wheels situation? Where did you get the kit from?
Shelby 427 1965 Posted May 10, 2013 Author Posted May 10, 2013 The taillights were done with Tamiya clear acrylics painted onto the inward facing side, and after it had dried I brushed over that with Tamiya XF-16 Flat Aluminium. Then on the outward side, I did the black lines with a fine permanent marker. I plan on using the wheels. I'm working on shortening the mounts on the car, and shortening the inside of the wheels, making them stick out less. It seems to be working so far! I bought the kit at my local hobby store.
om617 Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Looking good. Does the emblem on the grill say 16v? Engine look like the 8valve version.
IMSANUT Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 I'm Liking this. Here is the one I built..... Keep up the good work
IMSANUT Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Yes, the kit supplied grill does read 16V, but the motor is the standard 8V 1.8 L four. I WISH the kit had correctly modeled the Valvoline racer, but ah well. Fujimi's MK 2 GTI has the coke bottle hubcap wheels of the 1:1 car. I'm thinking of swapping them in as I think the wheels I used look a tad bit big.
Shelby 427 1965 Posted May 10, 2013 Author Posted May 10, 2013 Jim, can I ask how you got around the fitment issue on the bonnet? Yours doesn't seem to have it, mine does... Cheers!
