Beach Bum Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 Hey all, I'm wondering what primer you recommend for spraying through an airbrush? Getting ready to prime a couple of bodies and after primer will be decanting and spraying Testors Gloss Black on one and the other Testors Gloss Dark Blue on the other body. I've tried Plastikote which worked well, but, really getting into the airbrush and would like to try using it for priming also. I did use some Model Masters grey primer through the airbrush for all the other small parts, which I really liked, seem to spray really thin. Maybe the MM primer is the way to go for the bodies? although I wish I could get bigger bottles of it. Any suggestions? Thanks
my80malibu Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Scalefinishes has some great airbrush primer. there are others though, and you could always decant regular primer.
Beach Bum Posted August 19, 2013 Author Posted August 19, 2013 I think I will try decanting some plastikote and see how that sprays through the brush. Thanks
LokisTyro Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 I thought there would be more responses to this, but okay. I'd suggest giving your local paint store a call. Talk to them and see if you can get a few sample jars/tins. See what works and then drop the 30-40 dollars for a quart. I know House of Kolor makes a couple primers for plastics. The quarts are pretty affordable at around 30 bucks. This is my plan of action for when my airbrush gets here. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Duplicolor has a line of automotive paints in quart cans, they have a ready mixed primer that isn't too pricey at about $25.00 a quart. if you want Hobby type of primers there are a lot of acrylic brands of airbrush ready primers. or you could go to a paint store and let them know what you are planning to paint, they most likely have a House brand that can move you into.
935k3 Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 (edited) ALCLAD primers are great, they are ready to airbrush with no thinning necessary. Spray at 15 PSI. They come in White,Grey and Black. Edited August 20, 2013 by 935k3

Sorry to come in so late to the party, but I am looking for acrylic airbrush ready primers. Do you have any brands in mind? Edit- I just found the Vallejo primer on Amazon. Are there any better brands? Thanks, Russ Edited November 15, 2013 by russosborne
