I'm  going in for neck surgery at the end of August.

The doctor told me I have to stop smoking ( something about the 2 bone graphs won't heal properly because of the Nicotine  in my system)

Well.... I'm on day 2 of cold turkey, and I just want to drive my car into a brick wall !!!  Everything is making  me angry .... air .... flowers....children... you get the idea.

I quit cold turkey in 1995 .  I took a class at work  and after 3 to 5 days the nicotine should be out of your system.  I use to dream I was smoking. Been 28 years and I have no withdrawal when someone is smoking but it more like I never smoked. It will get easier…

Something that concerns me on this subject…

Dumb people surely don’t think they’re dumb.  No one usually thinks “hey, I’m a real baloonhead”.

But also, I don’t think I’m dumb.  So…how do I know FOR SURE I’m not dumb?  How could I ever know if I was?!

Worry no more Jim!? I’ve read some of your posts on here and I think you’re OK.?

We have an engineer where I work who has been in this particular industry for 40+ years - and he’s seen it all, done it all, is no-nonsense and will be brutally blunt and forthcoming with criticism with about everyone he deals with.  He has no time for nonsense or people acting the fool or people doing things the wrong way - he’s a real old school craftsman and engineer and he’s someone I look up to a lot.

He’s sometimes VERY tough to work with, but I’ve learned so much from him and admire his abilities a lot so I’m really fortunate to get to learn from him - I’d almost pay THEM for the training I’ve received from this one guy.  If you get too smart too soon or try questioning something, he’ll cut you down to size in a heartbeat, but if you want to learn you’d be hard pressed to find a better teacher.

Anyhoo; we we discussing some of the daily stupidity that occurs in our shop with some of the not-so-good employees who think they know everything and regularly prove themselves wrong through their actions, and I asked the same question as I asked above - stupid people don’t KNOW they’re stupid, so how can anyone ever really be sure that they’re not?

His reply?  “Just ask me, I’ll tell you if you’re stupid or not ??

Day 7

well, I made it this far. The cravings have let up, but I still catch myself wanting to smoke every few hours.

I'm not home free, but I'm close.

Yeah, we’ve got a gray haze out here in Indiana, and my friends and family in NY/NJ told me it’s particularly bad on the east coast

I was on my way to work early this morning when I heard a loud pop coming from underneath my Honda Accord and then a loud roar. I limped it to my mechanic's shop which thankfully isn't that far from my work place. He called me later in the day and said that the entire exhaust system from the cat back was coming apart from the rust and that the car will be in his shop until he can round up the replacement parts tomorrow. It won't be cheap according to him. Thankfully though , I made it to work on time.

Left for a trip to the west coast in the MX5 yesterday. Not ten miles from home, some guy in an suv decides to change lanes as I am passing right beside him. My wife screamed, I blasted the horn and instinctively pulled to the left….I bet he was no more than 6 inches away from hitting us before he realized wth he was doing.? My wife said she saw him put his signal light on and immediately start to move over. He obviously never bothered to check his side mirror or he would have seen me through the window.

The Very Fact that You ask this question proves you are not dumb. If you really were Dumb, you would never think to ask the question at all. Paradoxical isn't it?

Look Up the Dunning-Kruger Effect.

Dumb people don't learn anything through life. You see it everyday with things they do.

The rest of us learn from our mistakes or learn things as we go along and retain them because we know it makes life easier.

Completely my own fault, but I just dropped a full bottle of Testors liquid cement on the floor at my bench.  No one to be mad at but me.??

On the up side, it a cement floor, and no model parts were involved.  But I do have to vacate the area for a while.  Those fumes are potent!

No they don’t! It’s one of the criteria for being stupid.

Remember Ralph Cramden? The whole show was about his stupid schemes and how they blew up in his face

i ordered the new revell chrome paint from ebay. i messaged the seller with no response. finally, the seller decided to ship it after i put in an ebay claim that the item was not received. i been on hold on 2 projects waiting for this joker to ship it.

i have used ebay for many years, and i have left only 2 negatives. this was the 3rd. i think i might also record the opening of the package in case this joker shipped a 41 dollar empty box.

Driving from Winnipeg to Vancouver, we stopped in Penticton to visit friends. I needed an oil change in the MX5 so I went to a local drive thru place. We left our friends place yesterday and were about to “hit the highway” when they called to tell us there was an oil patch where we were parked in their garage.

I pulled over and checked the level and it was ok, but we decided it would be best to go back to the oil change place. They said it was leaking due to a “faulty” filter.? They replaced it and topped up the oil and double checked for leaks and off we went. It’s a good thing our friends noticed that oil slick or our trip would have taken a real nasty turn!?

Glad you didn't scatter your nice engine, but that's the main reason I change my own oil, and will until I fall off my perch.

You ever watch the mouth-breathers that work in most of those places? When they're not hooting and playing grab-ass like a bunch of lower primates, they're on their phones keeping up with the latest world news and market reports.  ;)

And they don't apparently pay enough to hire people capable of putting a filter on right (which sure as h. ain't rocket science), or getting the drain plug in without cross-threading, stripping all the threads from overtightening, or just leaving it loose.

Nothing much has changed in 5 decades. When I was working warranty claims in a Datsun dealership (my first job in the car biz), my first paid-for major engine work was changing out the rod bearings in a brandy-new 240Z with 1500 miles on it, because our shop oil-change chimps drained it, then took it to lunch without any oil.

In my 50+ years in the car biz, I've seen too many engines destroyed because of incompetent oil-change "professionals", and owners who assume that when they pay for a job, it gets done right.

Vehicle owners do bear at least some responsibility to look under their vehicles for wet spots occasionally...particularly after an oil change...and check the oil level regularly.

Me too! It would be a good excuse to do the 2.5L swap though.? I don’t believe their faulty filter story, but what else are they going to tell us?
