What Irked You Today?

Our AC conked out at one time. So my father called the local heating and air company, Gurley And Sons, to come take a look. It turned out that the compressor in the outside unit was fried. The person that worked for Gurley's told me that they would call with estimates for a new compressor. Weeks go by without so much as a smoke signal. So my father calls another company that he has dealt with before. Pass One Hour Heating And Air. They came out, told me that they had to order a new compressor. One week later the AC was fixed thanks to them. Never calling Gurley's again.

Interesting when that happens sometimes. You wonder if they have so much business that you don't matter to them or do they just suck as a company? It's just plain rude.

Glad you got it fixed. I've always made a point to thank a good company that fixed something and tell them they'll be the first one I call if I have a problem in the future.

I know politics is officially off the table here as it should be. I have one thing to say and just leave it at that. I don't think even Steven King could make this stuff up.

People letting their dog just go where ever and not picking up after it........... I need a dog as a companion so I'm not alone with my illness. These other people with dogs don't even need them. They just want to have one because I do.

Of the four "professional women" I had the pleasure of trying to work with today on banking and legal issues, only one had even a halfway handle on her job. Not bashing on women by any means, just anyone who gets paid pretty well to dress nice, sit in an office in the AC, and is supposedly an "expert" who can find relatively simple answers and understands the procedures and rules in their own domain...and doesn't have much of a clue.

It's disconcerting that, after only a couple hours online preparing to meet with these people to get their help with some problems and not come off like a total ignoramus, I end up knowing more about the crappola than those whose "expertise" I'm depending on to help me sort things out.

Rust never sleeps.

It seems to the case more and more. I often wonder what these kind of people are paid for, as stated above, seems you know more about whatever it is you are dealing with than the people whose business it is to know these things. Auto sales people pop to mind.

With auto sales, those people often work with more than one make.  They are going to know (or at least should know) a little bit about each product, but won't know everything about it.  Their expertise (the good sales people) will be in figuring out what you, the buyer, need (or want), then steering you to the best vehicle they have access to that meets your needs.

And, that won't necessarily be the most expensive one.  When I bought a new car last December, the salesman asked me if a leather interior was a thing for me.  It wasn't, so he steered me to the mid-level model as opposed to the top one.  Sure, the top model had a couple other things too, but I didn't need or want any of those badly enough to pay the difference.

Spectrum had to come the other day. Seems the original installer didn't use an all weather connector out side. Just a normal one. A 5 way splitter inside when a 2 way was all that was needed. And a faulty router as the original one had only 1 light lit when it would have had 3 lights lit. Glad this guy liked doing his job. He was here for 3 hours checking and replacing everything.

"Incidences". It's "incidents". You'd think "professional" talking heads that don't have any job but using words would know that.

What is with the penchant for adding syllababbles or just flat wrong endings...like "conversate" and "orientate" and "independency" and "applicate" and "occupate"?

Yup...sometimes you get a competent and caring person to do work, and it's always a pleasant surprise.

Last time my ISP sent a really good guy to fix poorly done wiring outside the house.

But then they billed me $100 for what was supposed to be a free service call because it was THEIR work that had to be corrected.

I'm on Spectrum's "do not call" list.

Before they bought out Time Warner,  TW sent me to collections over $20 for equipment I had already returned.  Called their customer service and had a 'was it over when the German's bombed Pearl Harbor" moment.  They cancelled the delinquency and sent me a check for $10.xx.

Fast forward years later, I had a sales rep knock on the door in the middle of the afternoon (working from home).  I told him I switched as their Internet speed was too slow for 'adult movies' and the screen kept freezing!  This guy had absolutely no response...he may have tendered his resignation when he got back to the office.

Last week stopped by the TMobile kiosk at Sam's Club. I have decided I am tired of Verizon playing juggle the numbers with my bill. Since it was a kiosk the agent did not have phones available, only the display ones. Did all the paperwork and the agent told me I should have my new phone within 2-3 days. It has been a week and I still do not have the phone. Called the number on my paperwork got a very terse message "The person you are calling cannot be reached at this time" and then hung up. I called the kiosk agent, he gave me another number. Here is where I am going to make reference to something that may result in a suspension. I am not a racist, my late wife was a foreign national with a heavy accent. Could not understand but maybe every fourth or fifth word. We quickly got involved into a circular conversation. I guess if they ask the same question enough times the answer they are receiving may change. Anyway, I finally got the gist that I needed another number but was unsure what it was. Called the kiosk again, after a short discussion we decided the number was a PIN I had set up. Called TMobile again got a different, at least different name, individual. The circular conversation began again. I finally got her to understand the PIN number. She replied, "That account has been cancelled." "How can it be cancelled it has not been activated yet." "You did not reply to email verifying account." "I never received an email." "You will need to go back to the store and resubmit your request." It is a 60-mile round-trip to the nearest TMobile. I am still a Verizon customer.

The dwindling wildlife at our home. We moved here a little over 20 years ago and there were frogs, newts, and snakes. I used to stand outside at dusk and watch the bats circling above catching bugs but don't see them anymore. Our neighbors on both sides of us and most houses in the neighborhood have monthly service come and spray around their houses for bugs. I do yardwork most days and am not bothered by bugs. I see them but they're supposed to be there because that's where they live and they're part of the eco system.

I still hear the occasional owl at night. The latest thing that has bothered me are the squirrels. "Steve" used to come around every day but haven't seen him in a month or two. As the wife points out, they do have a life span like any other animal but I'm not seeing the usual 4 - 6 other squirrels either. The last few days I've had 1 or 2 show up and I make sure to toss out seeds for them. The birds that are always here have dwindled lately too. Maybe the hot summer weather has changed their habits but it seems odd to me.

Just needed to get this off my chest.

That could be part of the problem. People don't seem to realize that if you poison the bugs, you poison everything that eats bugs, and everything that eats the creatures that eat bugs too. DDT almost destroyed the eagle population, but nobody apparently remembers that. Read Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. Same goes for poisoning rats and mice.

And environmental toxins are having devastating effects on frogs and other amphibians. The data is clear for anyone to read. https://www.froglife.org/2024/05/01/croaking-science-amphibians-and-chemical-pollution/

Kinda funny with all the existential-planetary-crisis hysteria going around, there's so much total ignorance too.

There are any number of ways of dealing with "pests" that are eco-friendly and don't kill creatures higher on the food chain.

What irked me today was several "adults" who are just flat incapable of accepting responsibility for their own careless actions, but make excuses as valid as "the dog ate my homework".

These are not young adults, either, so this isn't generation-bashing.

DTE the electric service provider. At least once a week, sometimes more the power goes out. It's usually out no more than five minutes. It is however off long enough to disrupt everything and auto start the generator and then shut it right back down. I have called to inquire what is up with these numerous short term outages and was told there would be an investigation into it....and I would be contacted by a DTE engineer to discuss it. Still waiting on that call. Meanwhile, power just keeps going out....

In general I am not one of those people that have an obsession with facebook and hang on there 24/7. However, from time to time I follow certain post or current issue. We have this group that is HIP XXXXXX official. So people post anything from questions, looking for help or advertising local business.
The latest that grabbed my attention was a picture of a bill from a local restaurant that had “sorry, I don’t have any extra money for a tip” on a receipt for $18 paid with a credit card. It was posted by the mom of a teenager who was the waitress. The incident aside, the comments and discussions that followed were just something that I just can not comprehend. The level of stupidity, ignorance and indifference mixed with entitlement and lack of simple common sense just blew my mind. It didn’t just irk me. It took me on a rollercoaster of anger, pity and a feel of no hope for humanity.

If I didn't have money for a tip, I'd eat at home.

Or get take-out!

Unfortunately in this country service people like wait staff depend on tips for their income. Making this type of excuse (especially when paying with a credit card) makes them a (word I can't use on the forum).

I believe the problem is multifaceted and lies on both sides of the fence. On one side, people need to understand that waiters are basically commissioned employees that on a general principle are getting paid just like insurance agents, car salespeople or real estate agents. On the flip side, people getting into that business need to understand that it is a trade like any other, requiring skill and experience to be profitable and that tips (just like any commission) are earned and being a waiter is not for everyone. Just like any other job.

A minor Irk.

Fitted Bed Sheets.

I'll date myself, by saying that growing up, fitted sheets had elastic only on the ends of the sheet, not the sides.

Now, the elastic is all the way around the hem of the sheet. This turns changing sheets into an all out wrestling match.

When the bed in in a corner, it is even worse. Now that I have the beginnings of Osteoarthritis in both shoulders, it is all I can do to get the sheets on the bed.

It is a First World Problem, I know, but It Irks me to have to fight just to get clean sheets on a bed.

Thanks, For Listening.

Mozzi, I hear you. My one of my Daughters worked as a waitress. It was tough work, and she did it long enough to be a pro. She worked in a couple 4 Star restaurants in Paso Robles, so I know she was good. She said Tips could vary wildly from night to night. I tip very Well, now that I have learned from her.

The Tip with the Credit Card was just being a Blah, Blah Blah. What we used to call a Richard Move. Shame on them.
