NOBLNG
They are pushing the “zipper merge” thing here too in Winnipeg. In theory it should work fine if both lanes are on the same page and everyone is paying attention. Both lanes have to be moving at the same pace for it to work smoothly. In practice though it does cause the “shock wave” of braking that David mentioned. The lane that is closed always seems to be the quickest route through the bottleneck. On what planet is that even possible? You get the timid ones who can't judge speed or distance and don't have a hope in jello of merging smoothly, you get the panicking dorkotrons who have to slam on the brakes and OMG OMG STOP!!!!!!!, and you get the Johnny Rockets who just nail the throttle and expect everyone to make way for THEM. Maybe one in a hundred thousand has the attention, judgement, and pacing skill to "zipper merge" the way it should work in an ideal universe. The problem with the VAST majority of stuff "experts" come up with is that every system that involves multiple humans with different levels of ability interacting IS SUBJECT TO THE LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR...which means it's going to grind to a halt frequently or involve "accidents" (which is just another word for incompetence and/or inattention in action). Ace-Garageguy
Agreeing to help someone with some complex things they have zero knowledge in, investing considerable time and effort, and having them try to micro-manage the work, second-guessing and arguing constantly...based not on expertise or even questionable internet research, but just on "feelings". Sometimes being someone's friend just isn't worth it. If you know it all, don't ask ME for help. Do it yourself. And if I DO help you, don't get angry with ME when I tell you the truth. 89AKurt
Everyone knows Waste Management is practically a monopoly now. They bought out a local trash service, didn't know until all of us got a bill from them. I just spent a few hours trying to not get started, to cancel service, and it's impossible...... website shows ZERO option to cancel, got on the infinite hold phone line for 36 minutes and gave up. So I just drove the can down to their office, and did it the old-fashioned way in person. Another local company said it's been nuts since this happened, they already serve my street, so I should be set. 1

Your story is all too common, big company buys up little guy, drives up the price, ect ect. I actually left that job due to the "corporate culture " I watched unfold in front of me. Seems like the mob ties may be gone, but the practices remain. Lol

Wherever money is to be made by having the people over a barrel, would not be surprised if that is still happening.

mikemodeler
So I am grateful that Hurricane Helene did minimal damage to my area of NC and I pray that the good people who were affected by it can recover soon, although that will definitely take time due to the size of the storm. But what irks me is that for three solid days, I have been listening to the sound of chainsaws because some neighbors hired a small crew to do some tree work and they are taking forever to get the job done. I'm sure the price was right but for God's sake, I am sitting here with my gun range hearing protection on because of the noise! I work from home and of all of the weeks for this to go on, its when I have some deadlines to hit and the noise is literally giving me headaches. And once they are done with the chainsaws, they start up the leaf blowers to clean up the remnants of the trees. Again, grateful but frustrated! Ace-Garageguy
I was in the grocery store last night, and it looked like the TP-hoarding has started again. Because of the dockworkers' strike? Geez. You really can't fix stupid...or even reason with it. Edited October 3 by Ace-Garageguy CLARITY

A modeler named mike
Last night on the news they talked about how this strike would interrupt our lives and made comparisons between the strike and the Covid days of shortages. "They" set the tone for this hoarding BS, scare the baJesus out of the population which turns to panic buying. I don't know about the rest of you guys but I don't ? more because of a strike! So I'll be okay..?

It is not like we couldn't make do with piece of newspaper, a large leaf, or in an emergency, our fingers. Ewwww?! It's not that bad. Our butts can handle that, and hands can be washed. We are so spoiled! Edited October 3 by peteski

I am so glade you didn't include issues of Model Cars Magazine. ?Butt? you are right, there are more important essentials that are needed to get by for extended shut downs or strikes. Topping off my oil tank is first on my list, then comes stockpiling potato chips, cheese puffs and pretzels.. I'll have to try that fingers trick, but what do you wipe them on? The wife's bath towel? ??

You can rinse them off if you still have running water, or wipe them off any any handy piece of fabric (bath towels are fair game). Licking is not recommend, but would work as a last option. Or have your dog lick your fingers clean (some dogs actually enjoy eating poopsicles).
