Fun_E_Car Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 Hey guys, I was asked to build a Prototype Funny Car model for some new decals that will be coming out soon. Thing is, I haven't built a model in 10 years (I know, shame on me). At that time I was just getting into Lacquer paints and thought they were the greatest thing on earth. They were so easy to use in my airbrush and cleaned up easily. I always hated working with enamel paints, even when I was a kid building all my models back then. My airbrush hated them and to clean it was a pain in the ass. Now after wanting to get back into modeling, I hear that Lacquer paints are now illegal? Is this true? Also, I went to both my great Hobby shops and learn that they both are gone. Ugh and sad. So I made a trip to Hobby Lobby and found some paints I could use. Thing is, they had Lacquer primer and not any lacquer paints, mostly all enamel. Funny thing is, they don't have any enamel primer? Can I use the lacquer primer and then paint it with enamel paints? And what should I use for a clear coat? I am just looking for recommendations and if there are websites where I can purchase the right paints? I have a House of Colors paint chip book from Slixx, but I know they don't deal with them anymore. And any body painting advice will be greatly appreciated. I just feel like I am starting over. ALSO, I need to get some resin parts chromed. I used ChromeTech in the early 2000's and I see he is still in business. Are they still repayable or is there better places to get parts chromed? Any help will be great guys and thanks in advance. Also I am taking photos of the build process and will post them as I go. Thanks again, --Dave
my80malibu Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 Dave if you have the colors you need in enamel, you can mix in Laquer Thinner, and spray that through your Airbrush. I would suggest that you get the Don Yost Video, entitled "The Art of Airbrushing Show Quality Model Cars" It may be very helpful to you in the future. Don posts on this board, You can shout a request directly to him.
nitro norman Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 Testors has a great line of Laquer paints. Their One Coat Laquer line has some beautiful colors. Their clear coat is great too. These colors dry very fast and the clear polishes out beautifully. Tamiya also has a great line of laquer paint. However , for some reason ( something to do with California laws ) their clear is no longer available in this country. They do have a pearl clear that is real nice. Since the Tamiya clear is no longer available; I use the One Coat clear on Tamiya, and it works fine. MCW has a huge line of laquer colors for both production cars and race cars. Black Gold has a large selection of House of Kolor laquer in spray and jars for airbrushing. Duplicolor laquer is used by many. Their Filler Primer is the only one I use. I haven't used their other colors much. You have to be careful with Duplicolor. (except for the primer ) as it is pretty strong and can attack the plastic. AT least that's my experience with it. But, it's been a while since I've tried it. Well, I hope this helps. Maybe others can add to this list. As far as model car painting goes, laquer is still going strong.
