Ben Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Does anyone know if the chassis in the AMT Mach Won funny car kit was used in any other kits that have been reissued in the last few years? I just won a built up Mach Won Mustang off Ebay that I plan to restore. I'm just wondering if I happen to have a kit that has that same chassis so I can build that from new parts.
Snake45 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 It looks like a first or second generation Logghe chassis. Might be the same one that was in the JoHan '68 Javelin or '70 Olds (AMT and JoHan shared some tooling in those days). You can see the instructions here: http://public.fotki.com/drasticplasticsmcc/mkiba-build-under-c/amt-instructions/straightline-competition/amt-70-mustang-funn/
vamach1 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 It looks a lot like the chassis in the Revell Boss Mustang funny car.
Mark Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Back then, that particular chassis was used in a few other AMT kits like their '69 Cougar (not the '68 that Model King reissued, which was an MPC kit), the Funny Hugger '69 Camaro (again not the one reissued by Model King, that was the Funny Hugger II with a different chassis), and a longer version was used in the AMT Gas Ronda longnose '69 Mustang. MPC was a competitor to AMT back then, and Jo-Han sold a few kits through AMT but none of their kits were combinations of the two company's parts or tooling. No recently reissued kits have that exact same chassis. I'd wait until getting the built model in my hands before looking for parts; you may be able to save most of what you have. If you need to snag another kit for parts, I'd say get either a Polar Lights funny, or one of the recent MPC reissues like the Beswick GTO or Model King '68 Cougar, and either adapt the whole chassis or take only the needed parts from it. The engine from one of the AMT '33 Willys kits might be good to have around, too.

Hi Mark, after looking at the Polar Lights, Gas Rhonda/Tommy Grove Mustang kits, the chassis in those kits looks very similar to the chassis on this Mach Won kit! It just needs to be shortened and the rear body pivots from the Mach Won chassis will need to be added to the Polar Lights chassis. I just ordered three of the Tommy Grove Mustang kits from Tower Hobbies. I broke the windshield in two on the Mach Won body so I'm hoping the Polar Lights glass will work as well. Here's some pics of the Mach Won as I got it off Ebay. It's disassembled and soaking in Westy's Bleach White tire cleaner right now. Edited February 1, 2015 by Ben
Mark Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 I'd keep the chassis that came with it...it's put together better than most of them were. Looks like it's all there, looks like it can be disassembled and stripped easily.
Ben Posted February 3, 2015 Author Posted February 3, 2015 I broke the left rail into five pieces trying to disassemble it. Lots of glue! I was able to glue it all back together though. I just need to soak it in Castrol Super Clean to remove the rest of the paint that the Westly's Bleach White didn't touch. Just scored another one partially built with the box off Ebay.
