Bugatti Royale

This is the Testors Bugatti Royale. Not a bad kit to build considering it is a multi piece body.

It also comes with the top of the hood as part of the cowl and the sides of the hood as part of the sides of the body,

which means although it has a very nice engine it cannot be seen.

I altered mine by cutting the top of the hood away from the cowl and the sides from the body so the engine could be displayed.

I glued the into a single unit that can be lifted off.

Looks pretty good, Frank. What kit is that? Is it the 1/16 scale kit that all the writing on and in the box is in Chinese? If so, How did it build up? Any problems? I have one and just haven't had the nerve to bust into it.

Nice work, of a nice kit.

The Italeri 1/24 kit was one of the first car made in their classic car series, starting in the late 70's, this is one of the Royal 41: Berline de voyage model (Italeri also made the Coupe Napoleon), Italeri wanted to choose the really prestigious top notch classics to start their series, as mention one of the oddity is that the side hood panels are molded in "one piece" with side door panels, leaving only the top panel to be removed to show Bugatti huge "block", nice & accurate details.. but 2 pieces plastic "huge" tires!

The 1/16 scale kit is a different Royale 41: the Binder model (supposed to have been made for the king of Roumania) originaly made in 1974 by Japanese Bandai, this is a really nice kit, demands patience when assembling, but a real BIG museum piece when finished, boxed by Fuman in China a very nice kit for it's time.

.....real car $14,000,000!!! ;)

I built the same kit when it first came out in the early 80s and found it to be an enjoyable build. You did a nice clean job. I found that the wheels improved a lot when I used a gray wash in the slot/spoke section of the wheels. The only chrome on the real wheels is on the hub center. I actually used a matt foil on the disc portion and bright silver paint on the rim section. I will try to post a photo of the Coupe Napoleon version of the kit this week-end.

Keep on building those Classics! :o

Frank,

Looks good. I just finished the Lindberg version of the same kit. It went together pretty well and the hood top and sides were separate pieces. Painted mine yellow, but messed up the side pieces for the hood with some black overspray. That's what you get for trying to do too much painting at the same time. LOL . It's way too cold here to paint now, so it's looking like it might be springtime before those pieces get re-painted.

In reference to the "big block" that ZIL 111V mentioned, it was 4 and 1/2 feet long and cast iron!!! Incredible when compared to the way things are built today. :o

Not only that, but the cylinder head and cylinder block were one piece, which was standard Bugatti practice. That's right, no head gasket because there was no separate head! To do a valve job you have to drop the crank, rods, pistons out of there! The crazy thing about the Royales was that despite only 6 being built there were several hundred engines made to power the Bugatti built railcars in France. That's why there are several Royale replicas around. The engines are not real hard to find for those with the $$$.

Yeah, I have one, too. Intex boxing. My wife's friend gave it to me. It was kind of a surprise because she didn't know what it was or anything about it, "Just a big model car, do you want it?" I said yes, but figured it was diecast or something. I was shocked when it arrived. Unstarted, complete and in excellent condition. It must have been around a long time because it also came with two spray cans of Pactra paint old old school yellow and red lables.... printed with 35 cents on the cans.

I wonder if antique paint is worth anything :P
