"Gone In 60 Seconds" 73 Mustang Fastback

Car Crazy 81

rickr442 might have some good information about this car. In that it was not actually a '73 but a '71-'72 that was modified with a '73 grill. Key to this is the bumpers. Ford moved the front and rear bumpers out a few inches for the Federally mandated 5-mile per hour requirement on all new cars. It really shows if you know what you are looking for! Eleanor on the other hand has the tight look of a 1972.

Also, by 1973, all Mach 1's had the "Ram Air" hood but only a few were actually connected to air-cleaner as that was an extra cost option. Eleanor on the other hand had a flat standard hood. Not easy to find in 1/25th scale.... but could be pulled from a Johan Funny Car of the same year. I checked and it is the closest thing out there if there are no resin items available!

The side rockers were painted flat black like most '71 and '72 Mach's without the side stripe.

Engine in 1973 would be a 351 Cleveland with a 4bbl carb. Chances are that the movie car was not modified much as the '72 with the 351 had plenty of power to do the stunts!

Hope this helps.

This is my Mach 1 which I owned for about 5 years.

Sold it when the cost of gas went over 2 bucks a gallon and doubled my investment as well. Sure was fun to drive though.... :(

Note: the close tight fit of the rear bumper, the chrome trim separating the black from the body color (only on cars that did not have the Hockey Stick striping) and the duel scoop "Ram Air" hood which was a standard feature on all Mach 1's.

Incidentally, this car had a 351 Cleveland with a 4 bbl carb, 4 main bearing block and 4 speed. It also came equipped with air, deluxe interior and all the bells and whistles except the stripe, electric windows, Ram Air and rear window defogger.

Trivia, 1971, 72 and 73 were the only years where the tranny HAD to be in reverse to get the key out of the ignition... :)

The flat hood is available from http://www.afxnscaleresin.150m.com/resin_hoods.htm. I believe they also have the correct wheels.

gonein60seconds.com has a rundown of all the modifications that were done.

Geez, If ol' Jairus keeps doin' this I'm gonna have to hire him as my agent or something!

I came to know Toby a bit shortly before he was killed, neat guy if waaaay too sloppy with movie stunts!

That's what got him in the end...

Now, Jairus is correct that Eleanor is not a Mach One... just a rough, salvage title, theft recovery (who'd'a thunk?)302 fastback out of Toby's junkyard in Gardena, stripped and rebuilt as a 'tank' with lots of stiffening of the body and Chassis. Even with a lot of prep, the car pretty much broke in half at landing in the long jump on 190th Street! The stock rims like your model displays are right on the money, but you do need the flat hood and a good bit of semi-gloss black paint to make it convincing! The hot setup might be to select a point in the film and replicate the car as it was at that moment.

It'd be cool to do a replica of Toby's jump practice car, a white '65 Fairlane 4-door!

I also wish that more people could see the movie in its' original form. Tha original music was as awful as it was priceless! Toby's widow removed all the music from the new edit so as to avoid having to pay his family the royalties they deserved.

In discussing the movie a couple of times with Toby I came away with the feeling that Gone was a documentary of sorts... at one time in the late-60s he was under indictment for 101 counts of Grand Theft Auto... Oh, the stories he could tell!

Keep us posted on your build!

Heres Some Progress On "Eleanor" I Installed An Engine Bay From A Junk Revell 69 Mustang For Detail Purposes It Was A Pain To Install It Took 2 Hours Of Cutting, Grinding, Sanding & Fitting But It Was Worth It Next Is The Engine Which I Plucked From A Revell 65 Mustang To Represent Eleanor's 351 Ci Windsor Engine. In Order To Do This I Have To Use The 65 Mustangs Motor Mounts To Remedy That Problem.

Looks great and I LOVE the engine compartment. The extra effort you put in by correcting the kit fender wells is well worth the time spent. (only two hours?) However, read Rick's response regarding the engine. It was a 302 that was in Eleanor, not a 351. But, if you have your heart set on a 351 then follow through because frankly I don't think it matters much. :)

Eleanor is back in primer again a fly landed on the fresh paint i laid on it i tried to repair it but that made matters worse so i stripped off the paint, cleaned it real good and primered the body.

Jairus- Thanks for the info i did a some research on Eleanor according to wikipedia. Eleanor in fact started out as a 72 Fastback with a 302 ci. H.B Halicki secretly built a modified 351 ci Windsor engine with a 4 Barrel carb. The engine i used came from a Revell 65 Mustang Fastback which is a 289 ci but the 302 & 351 is identical this is the closest engine i could get in a kit thats close to a 351 Windsor.

I got the dogdish wheels from Morgan Automotive Detail or known as M.A.D a nice quality set of resin wheels but i did a small modification i added a set of chrome lips from a set of Centerline wheels from a Monogram 70 Chevelle kit.

I got the hood from Motor City Resin Casters talk about great quality parts. Thanks Jeff Ballard for making this great piece i sure will order from him again. I had to fix a few issues such as : sanding the top of the engine bay so the hood can sit flat and the kits cowl had to be removed so im gonna fabricate one from sheet styrene. I finally have the dash finished talk about a pain to modify i used the face from a AMT 73 Cougar kit which is about the closest to the stock piece.

Eleanor finally has paint on her for the 4th and last time. The most tedious part was painting the black striping i was getting nervous painting the stripes but it was a sigh of relief when it came out nice. I ougha have this one finished by thursday because of the model contest thats on saturday which i'll be entering Eleanor and three other models. Wish me luck, guys.
