southpier Posted September 22, 2014 Share Posted September 22, 2014 (edited) anyone know of a dealer for these products? after watching one of dr cranky's videos, I tried to place an order direct this morning - there was going to be a 21$ ship & handle fee for a $38 order. but it did include a "free" steering wheel in exchange for a secret password ..... from the Lay It Low forum, I am concluding the company is in Texas, so customs can't be the excuse. obviously I did Not complete the order; OK- update: DJ got back to me with the McGuffin - S&H should be $5.25 flat rate - that's real & fair to me. On my site (unrelated to the hobby), we had entered some weights wrong on some light items. While it was correct for a single unit, it added up to a huge number when people ordered multiples. The system doesn't account for pro-rating the weight and so something that should be .3lbs each x10= 3lbs, ended up being 30lbs. It overcharged by a lot. we've since fixed it, but the system is too smart for itself, so all my orders are manually double checked before charging credit cards, but it is frustrating to lose sales to something so easy to overlook. Calculating shipping on a web site is not an easy task. My provider just changed to the weight system and I can not get it to work with every order when multiples are purchased. I suspect that what I described in my post is what's happening. when I first started my site, I had never done anything like that before. So for single items I would just put 1lb. UPS charges me the same whether it's 2oz or 1lb. The problem is when you have light items like that, 2 pieces with an actual weight of 4oz is now 2lbs because of the system. I've long since fixed it, but it's easy to overlook on some items if you have a lot on your site. sounds like they're taking care of it. On Ebay i figure that cost into the starting price of the item. When i was a full time Ebay seller many years ago i spent about 700.00 a year on packing supply's and shipping boxes for the bigger stuff that wouldn't fit into the USPS boxes. It adds up quick and took out a chunk of profit before i did that. This is back when it was easy to sell on there and the fees were under 5% for Ebay and Paypal. I found using usps flat rate small boxes are the best deal that include tracking & insurance. I sent an item in just a regular envelope, but did registered, so I had proof & that was $4 & w/o insurance. . So $5.25 all you can eat for the small box. They don't weigh much, but they take up a lot of room on the truck. If you buy them locally, they are more expensive. Same for boxes. They weigh a lot though. A lot of people want to chalk it up to the cost of doing business. it is, but it has to be accounted for. Some add it into the cost of the product. That makes the product cost more. You can add it to the shipping. then people complain about shipping. Add it as a standalone fee, then people question why there is a fee. My #1 product that we manufacture and sell is $9.95. It also costs $9.95 to ship it. It sucks, but it's heavy. People complain about the shipping all the time. nothing I can do about it.
