So a couple of days ago I started working on my Revell of Germany Ferrari 288 GTO kit. My initial plan was to play it straight and paint it Italian Red, but a Google image search showed me a couple in yellow. Was yellow actually available on this car, or were all 200 or so painted red? I've been unable to find any color information during my research, and any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yellow was a 288 GTO color, as was black, however most were red.

If I'm not mistaken, taking this from my Forza magazine. The cars were all red. Other colors were done by the owners. However as we all know, money talks and Ferrari paints.

According to Joe Sackey, all were red when they left the factory. There was a yellow GTO, but was built in red and later repainted Fly Yellow. There is/was a silver GTO. It was also built in red and repainted. The Sultan of Brunei had 4; one was red, the others were Blue, Dark Slate, and Black.

Read more about it in this thread at FerrariChat.com: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=164148

If anyone knows Ferrari & Lamborghini history, it's Joe Sackey.

Mark, there was that rare one that Enzo did in Grigio Alloy. B)

That is gorgeous! Did you have to alter the ride height at all to get that stance, or is that box-stock?

Thanks for everyone's input. I sent an email to Mr Sackey to ask his opinion. I really dig the yellow, but I'm going for factory-correct on this build.

I already received an email reply from Mr Sackey...here's what he has to say:

"Mark:

Well, strictly speaking, ALL GTOs were built in red.

BUT, Ferrari-associate Pininfarina did paint one of the prototypes in yellow, although this was done post-production. I suppose you could refer to the Pininfarina job as "done by Ferrari" since they are Ferrari's official coach-builder. That car has become accepted by all enthusiasts as the "yellow GTO" and Ferrari did give it Clasiche Certification last year, so if you want your GTO to be yellow, sure, go ahead!

In case it helps you for accuracy's sake, the yellow car's chassis number 47649, and here are some pics showing its current Italian registration number MO.846288 which you may want to replicate...

Hope this helps you!

Very Best,

Joe"

Mark, I think you should do yours in that shade of yellow! I never really liked yellow on much of anything, but on Ferraris it just looks right. I seem to paint a lot of my stuff in non-factory colors, just to be different. For my GTO I actually used a Dupli-Color shade of 'Ice Blue'. Yes, the stance was lowered, the wheels tucked in, and I used slightly larger tires in the rear.
