VERY "Mysterious" Testors Pete 362 kit

Recommended Posts

Back in 1981-82 Testors marketed the 1/20th Peterbilt 359 kit (...Reissue coming soon :( )..another tractor was in the plans for release...

Remember seing a Testors Promotional flyer back then, probaly issued in 1981 or 82, showing, another Pete tractor kit: the brand new "then" redesigned 362 COE, 110" cab, single winshield, triple wipers, square headlights, top air deflector, molded in yellow with brown dual side stripes, pretty good chance the kit would have shared a few parts with the 1/20th Pete 359 kit.

Tought I dreamed that after all those years....but eBay just gave me the proof that I saw that folder nearly 30 years ago (same folder on sale now).

NEVER saw the 362 COE kit anywhere...did the project fade away

The Testors 362 suffered a similar fate as the AMT Garwood Garbage truck. It was announced but never put in to production.

Talking to Ernie Petit at Lindberg, the Testors 362 was indeed planned and even tooled but due to the slow sales of the 1/20th scale 359 (which just came back out) the 362 was shelved.. never to been seen again.

I was looking the conventional on evilbay for the conventional and ran across that promo ad the other day. Dang, that would have been a cool kit. I certainly would have bought one (or two, maybe three..)

Must admit that the 362 is way better looking, really neat! (at least the protoype pictured on promo shots) than the 359 kit...tought the 359 looked a bit toylike back then......("reworked" reissue looks much better).

Funny to see corporate marketing decision strategies...Plenty of 359's kits!

Back in 1982 the Pete 359 was kitted by: AMT in 1/25 & 1/43 scale,

from 1980 to 1982-3, five 359 kits will be marketed: Monogram 1/16, 1/32 & 1/25 Snapers, Revell AG 1/25 kit & Ertl with upcoming 1/25 Metal frame one in 1982-3... at least seven, 359's plastic kits were available on shelves, but no 362 COE ever been tooled by anyone in plastic kit, marketing, first, an "exclusive" brand new generation 362 sounded a better idea, than the "8"th version of a 359 kit?...go figure :o

I agree, we have had enough 359s, but I bet Tim Ahlborn doesn’t think so.

Oh, I think there have been enough 359 kits made. Too many of the standard hood too.

The original AMT T500 359, the AMT T501 359, the Revell Los Angeles/Germany 359 and the Revell/Monogram 359 are enough. One of them should have been a 127" BBC long hood.

The Ertl 359 racing truck and the tractor with the metal frames were horrible kits that never needed to have been developed.

Someone needs to make a different, popular, Peterbilt kit. Either something modern, like a 387, 386, 389 or 379-127" long hood or a 362. Something that can be built multiple ways, something that was popular. A 372 COE would be a neat model, but I doubt a lot of kits of a 372 would sell.

Yup, a 1/24th scale 362 or 362E would be a cool kit.

The Testors 362 was 1/20th scale and like the 359 version, very very basic, beginner modeler basic. The Lindberg version is the same way.
