Plywood effect

In general, balsa is usually too coarse-grained to look really right if presented as wood in most scales. Birch, poplar, walnut and other very fine-grained woods, which are the basis of the plywoods that Joe Smythe (southpier) refers to are much better. Because of its close grain, I also prefer basswood to balsa for boards in most scales.
