Hobby area flooring ideas?
TedD replied to crazyjim's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have a light colored wood laminate in my hobby room. Went to Lowes and picked up a Black rubber backed all weather carpet runner for under my work area. This works for me and was able to get by with only spending the xtra bucks for the carpet runner. -
I have no problem walking in and buying finger nail polish. With two daughters and being married 23 years, I have bought my fair share of girly things for them, that's for sure.

Great Tip. Need to scour around the house and see if there are any laying around.

Being new to model building I am pretty open to trying new things. After cruising the forums,I have discovered there is an advantage to having daughters and modeling. The advantage is the endless supply of paints in the form of nail polish. Since the girls are no longer living at home, I told the wife anything left by the girls is free game and I was going to raid the bathroom of all finger nail polish left behind. She then said to go thru her stash and take what I want. I think I ended up with 25+ bottles (not including the pinks) of nail polish and most are full and never opened. Think I'll get a pack of plastic spoons and check paint compatibility and colors.

The color is close enough for me. Its sprayed with craft acrylics and clear coated with minwax gloss clear acrylic.

LOL.. Booger is an understatement. I did struggle with a few things but learned a lot in the process. Looking forward to the next challenge.

Here's my first build in 30+ years. Back then, my models were pure glue bombs. Its not complete but starting to resemble an old time gasser and am pretty happy with it so far. Not doing much detailing as that will come with time as I get more builds behind me.

Light bulb for paint drying?
TedD replied to Bullitt's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I only recently started building plastic model cars as a hobby. One of my first purchases was the dehydrator for paint drying purposes.. I order this one from Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008H2OENC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00 in addition to the extra trays- http://www.amazon.com/Presto-06306-Electric-Dehydrator-Dehydrating/dp/B008HPVOAU/ref=pd_bxgy_79_img_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=10KHY1A2F4611E5QQMBF Once you trim out the bottoms of the trays, you have plenty of clearance. I also added the thermometer to the top and it maintains a temp of 105 perfectly. -
Whats your work area like?
TedD replied to Dann Tier's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Pretty cool to see the work areas of others. Only recently I reclaimed my shop area above my garage and started building model cars. Its not near as neat and clean as others but it works for me. -
CT Stroker decal goes on the hood.

What primer and paint did you use on the body?

Thanks for the welcome. Already picking up a lot of good information from the forum. Hope to post some pictures of my first build on the bench in the coming days.

Noob question on craft acrylics
TedD replied to TedD's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I think the problem is in the Createx Black paint. Body has been soaking for a little while and all the black stripped off with ease. All other colors (different brand) as well as primer stayed adhered. So the learning curve begins......... :-) -
Noob question on craft acrylics
TedD replied to TedD's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Surface Prep: Washing with warm water and Dawn dish soap. I use a "Gray" Scotch Brite pad while washing as it is a bit finer pad to scuff the surface. I then primed with Vallejo light gray primer and sanded with 600 grit. Then shot about three coats of Black Createx acrylic thinned 50/50 with "Future". I am wondering if A: need a couple more coats and B: Need to let it dry longer than 12 hours as I did with this application. At this point I am calling this a practice body and it is currently soaking in Water/Alcohol bath in prep to strip it so I can make another attempt at it. -
Looking for some guidance here on the use of craft type acrylics. I have watched numerous videos and must me missing something. I have tried painting bare plastic after prepping the surface as well as using primer before the top coat but the acrylic seems very delicate and is easily scratched when handled. I have tried thinning with "Future" thinking this may offer a bit more durability but I still get the same result. Should I be clearing it with something like Minwax polycrylic clear before handling? Any ideas on what step I am missing here?

I'm in League City just south of Houston, for now anyway. Wife's job will have us relocating to the Denver Colorado area in the next six months or so.

Hey Ya'll, Due to life's changes I decided to give model car building a try. I built a few when I was young but they usually resembled something much less than the picture on the box with finger prints all over the body. LOL I built RC airplanes for many years but due to developing allergies to balsa dust and cyno glues, I had to give that up. After a few other hobbies, I really wanted something that could occupy the hands and the mind so here I am. I have done a ton of reading and am really impressed with the quality of detail you builders put into these things. I hope to one day have a finished model worthy of posting pictures on here. I have begun assembling the bits and pieces I don't have to aid in putting together a quality model. I.e. spray booth, rebuilding my airbrushes that have been sitting idle for many years, glues, paints, etc... Primarily interested in American Iron Hot Rods of all eras but may build a few other types of models just for something different. Regards, Ted
