About to give up airbrushing + rant
Don Wheeler replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Andy, Have a look at how I clean my Badger 155. It is very similar to your brush. Also, I have some info on the Harbor Freight. It's not a bad airbrush. The needle is pretty fragile, so make sure there isn't a burr on it. The tiny .35mm nozzle is tricky to clean. Soak it in some lacquer thinner and flush it good with an eyedropper. Be sure you tighten the tip cap all the way. The needle seal is adjustable. It may be too loose. You should feel a little drag when you remove and install the needle. Try spraying plain water. If it sprays OK, then maybe you have a paint problem. The Harbor Freight should spray fine with 20 to 25psi. And finally, practice on some junk plastic until you feel comfortable using it. It will be time and paint well spent. HTH Don -

Don't know which airbrush you have or what paint you are using. But, assuming the airbrush is a decent one and in good shape, It sounds like you must be doing something wrong. If you gave more details, maybe someone could help. Don -

Paasche V Review
Don Wheeler replied to Don Wheeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks, Jb. I think you will find the HF sprays pretty rough. You can improve it by turning down the tip and needle. I did mine on a drill press. But, it won't come close to a real Badger in performance. Nice photos. Don -

Badger 360 review
Don Wheeler replied to Don Wheeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hi Bill, You might notice that the airbrushes I've purchased are not very expensive. The site is just a hobby, and I don't make any money from it. Most of the Badgers were samples. Ken Schlotfeldt, the president of Badger likes my reviews and offers them to me. But, I always state how I got the brush, and I give my honest opinions and observations. If any other company sent me samples, I would love to add them. I suspect Iwata would think my site is small potatoes and not be interested. Besides, it's pretty well known that Iwatas are good airbrushes and there are plenty reviews out there on them already.. I certainly don't need an Iwata with all the airbrushes I already have. And, it's hard for me to justify laying down a big chunk of cash just to do a review, even though I love doing them. I have just purchased a Paasche VL, partly because I got a break on the price, and I will soon be adding a review of it. Thanks for asking. Don -

Is there a way to fix a leaking airbrush
Don Wheeler replied to sak's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Badger is known for great customer support. If the brazed joint is cracked, I bet they will replace the brush. Check out this page for return and contact info. Don -
No problem. You're welcome to use anything on my site. I'd just like people to know where it came from. When you left click on an image in Google, the upper right corner of the next screen has the words "Website for this image" and the source URL. Don

I'd just like to add that the photo came from my website where you can find details of the Badger 155, the Paasche H, the Aztek and several other airbrushes. And it would have been nice if you had given me credit for it. Don

You Say You Want a Spray Booth, Do Ya?
Don Wheeler replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
If you are concerned about fan type for spray booths, you should look at this page. http://www.cincinnatifan.com/explosion-proof-fan.htm Notice that there is no such thing as an explosion proof fan. Notice that spark/explosion resistant fans are made that way by using non-ferrous materials, not by special motor type. If you move enough air to keep vapors below the lower explosion limit, (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flammability_limit ) sparks will not cause an explosion. If you don't stay below this limit, then a static electric spark from unrolling a piece of Scotch tape or a spark from throwing a light switch could set off an explosion. Always have the fan running before you begin to spray. Don -
spray booth explosion
Don Wheeler replied to Bowtienutz's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don't want to get into the discussion on fan types. But, if you keep the concentration of vapors below the LEL (lower explosion limit), you can have all the sparks you want and it won't explode. Here's what I think might have happened to the poor guy. He started spraying without the fan running. Maybe he was just intending to do a little touch up. Then he decided that, boy the fumes are getting a bit heavy. So he flips the power switch. The switch makes a spark, and Boom, explosion. Another possibility is that the fan wasn't moving enough air to keep the concentration low enough, maybe a dirty filter or no opening for incoming fresh air. In that case, static discharge could have set it off. You always want to have good ventilation before you start spraying. Don -
They work fine on aluminum chassis for electronic projects, not so good for steel unless it's really thin. Don

I've done a review of the Paasche H airbrush that you can see here if you're interested. Comments and suggestions are welcome. Don

You might want to ask the people at work who use it how they keep it from clogging. If there's a trick, they would know it. I buy little bottles with a screw on lid at the dollar store, and they seldom clog. Don
