Can someone tell me if the engine in this kit a 396? The kit says it’s a 409 and all the decals and badges say 409 but the kits engine is clearly not a 409 with the heads and valve covers not being the distinct shape of those.
Thanks.

Checked out the Miniart website. Fascinating "About us" read.
I like their kits, a little delicate with small parts though, I have another version of this bulldozer with the blade and had a part that was broken in the kit, they not only replaced the one part but sent me the entire sprue as a replacement.

Been working on this one, finally got some base layers of paint and chipping applied. Next steps is the weathering and oil paint layers

I'm with you on the high price of the weathering products. I do like the idea of a lot of these new techniques, but the price is outrageous. Especially anything by Mig. It could discourage people from getting into armor modeling. I found a source for pigments in 100gram sizes for about 4 bucks. I went to Mig's website to compare prices. Not only are people paying a ridiculous markup to have it put in a tiny container, some of his illustrations are lifted from the Earth Pigments website. 100 grams is the smallest size offered. He darn sure buys in bigger quantities to pay less per kg. I'm a member at an armor modeling website. I thought about starting a thread about weathering for less money, but Mig is an advertiser and plenty of posters have no problem with the prices, even when they know about the crazy markup. Some believe Mig products are "made for the hobby". I didn't start the thread because I figured it might get deleted or start a flame war. Oh yeah- a local art supply store has Winsor & Newton oil paints for less than Abteilung 502 paints and a lot less than Michael's/ Hobby Lobby. As much as 75% less than those 2 stores.
Agree, anytime I try to suggest using craft supplies they all say oh but to get the best results you need to use such and such name lol. Or they don't take my work seriously for some reason. Really they just rebrand exsisting stuff that can be found for cheap. They are great for the hobby and all but I'd rather spend my money on my nice mustang gt sitting in my driveway not some pigments for my models lol.

Great job on the weathering. What techniques/materials are you using? I'm halfway through only the second armor model I have ever built. I have to say, weathering techniques have taken a quantum leap in the last 15-20 years.
I just use craft acrylics and cheap artist oil paints. I don't use any fancy techniques I just kind of build things up in layers. I clear coat with duplicolor gloss in between each painting stage and in the end I just spray it with liqutex Matt varnish. You don't need to spend a fortune on gimmick products.

Once they're all thinned out,do you airbrush them?
yeah, no need to thin it if you wanna just use a paint brush.

Simply WOW! Not sure how you guys manage to work with those craft acrylics. Are you thinning with water, Windex, alcohol?
my thinner is this, 50% blue windshield wiper fluid / 50% water and a few drops of glycerin, then I use that 50/50 with the craft paint. some colors need more some need less really just gotta mess around to find what works for you and your airbrush setup.
if you like to make super shiny builds i would stick with normal spray bombs
-
Outstanding work, very subtle and realistic. Did you create your own decals/graphics for those doors?
thanks, those decals come in the kit and It has another option of "reds orchard " in red lettering
-
Thanks, for oils I just use 2 colors mainly white and raw umber, also some paynes grey to add in shadows here and there and on any chrome parts. I never thin my oil paint though just use neat for the tube and clear coat over every step with duplicolor acrylic enamel gloss spray bombs. No drying time needed.

some progress on this revell kit, craft paints and oils

thought I'd toss this kit together for a quick build. decent kit kind of a like diecast though with the screw on chassis
the main weakness of the kit is the decals and lack of decals. the pin stripes fit nice. but a few are missing, there is no "trans-am" words. and the big bird on the hood is in some kinda dark purple color not black... that's the biggest disappointment to me.
anyway who cares it still looks cool lol

What color is that? I like the mustard yellow that was popular on the '70's 4x4's. Your Bronco turned out great!
thanks guys, the color is called "flame" its a craftsmart paint
