    '74 Dodge Tradesman Custom Van--A Mural-Painted Tribute For My Son

    I found a guy on Facebook that was doing these insanely awesome airbrushed murals on model cars. Knowing that I would never be able to achieve these results no matter how good of a painter I thought I might be, but wanting one of these creations in my collection, I reached out to him and he agreed to do one for me. I did all of the body work and had the body in primer when I shipped it off to him in Germany. I gave him full artistic freedom to paint it however he pleased. Opening the box upon it's return, I had no idea what my van would have painted on it. Unbeknownst to me, he had been watching my son's 2018/2019 football season via my Facebook posts. The Seaside Seagulls had an amazing year and made it to the State Championships! Needless to say, I was blown away! So what was to be a mural-painted build for me became a tribute build for my son. After I received the painted body, I did everything else you see here. My son absolutely LOVED it and that is him on the side #5!

    I originally built this car as a 4th grader in 1986 and did a pretty good job (IMHO...Lol). When I got back into model building as an adult, I decided to redo it. I originally had painted it pink but I wanted to take it red the next go around. After the pink was removed and I got it in primer, I happened across a photo in an old issue of Hot Rod magazine and there was a primered '37 Chevy Coupe gasser in there and the project took a whole different path.

    So not only is this the model that has been in my possession the longest, it's also my oldest surviving build as it was the first one I completed when I returned to the hobby almost 20 years ago now.

    Well, this one sort of took an interesting turn. My buddy had the paintwork 90% completed and just about ready for clear when something went wrong and he decided to strip it down and start over. Meanwhile, my son's high school football team had an exceptional year and they went to the state championships. And although they lost, it was still a very big moment for my son. Now, I from the beginning, told my buddy to paint this thing however he wanted. I wanted to give him the artistic freedom to lay down whatever he felt like doing. However, I did not see this coming. Unbeknownst to me, he followed along with my son's football season via my Facebook page and randomly one day sent me a message that the van body was about done and he asked if I wanted to see it. I was blown away with what I saw! He painted the van as a tribute for my son and his amazing year of football!

    So now what was going to be a model for MY shelf, is now going to be a sentimental gift for my son to put on HIS shelf. 

    Anyways, I'll show you a couple of the in-progress photos I requested from my friend and then I'll post up pictures tonight of the cleared body that I just received yesterday.
