For the humour-impaired, the first line in my last post was meant to be tongue in cheek with a slight edge to it. Apparently Don was offended. I can't help that. I have an attitude and people who know me know that.
One can spew all the little technical data you want in an attempt to sound like a big shot but resin casting is not very hard as far as equipment and materials. As I already stated the learning curve applies to laying out molds and figuring out resin and air flow. Most people don't do it professionally because they have real jobs which 98% of the time pay better!! I do it because I like working for myself and enjoy the process of creating a complete product from research to patternmaking, molding, instruction sheets, contracting out for P/E, etc. etc. I am willing to make less money for this independence. There have been dozens of people who have attempted resin casting over the years and I guarantee that some who are casting now will quit within the next 1 year, 5 years, etc. It is inevitable and will happen for many reasons.
Now before anyone gets snippy with me for anything I have written in this thread I say to go back and read it all again and try to comprehend what I have said. Try really hard!! I know I may have used some big words but that is just me. I actually use bigger words in private!

Vacuum is for the rubber not for the resin. I vacuum my rubber, too.
You guys can suck on your RTV all you want.
Please re-read my posts. Perhaps my language was unclear. Pressure is for everything - rubber and resin!!!! Vacuum for RTV moldmaking is a waste of time, equipment, and effort. The results from pressurizing the mold while it is curing are far superior than vacuuming it. I do not understand why one would go out and buy an extra piece of equipment that does an inferior job. I have made thousands of molds since I starting doing resin casting in 1980. I hesitate to try to estimate the number of castings since then - certainly in the many tens of thousands.

What do I know ......................
If pressurising is good for the resin which cures in minutes why wouldn't it do the same for the rubber which is still pourable after 3-4 hours? I may not know the exact reason why it works so well but I do know this; After I did it the first time I parked the vacuum pump permanently and have never used it again. That was in 1987! I would have converted to a vac-former but it was too bulky and my shop vac works just fine.
Aaron - you just need to get a bigger tank. I have a tall 15 gallon and I am doing several 1/12 scale bodies in it. I also have a 2, a 4, and a 10. The 4 is the same diameter as the 2 and twice as tall. I lay it down and now I can put any 1/24-5 body mold in it. If you look around you can find old ones that may need sandblasting and a new seal. Check out Ebay, Craig's List, used industrial supplies, painting contractors, etc.
Bob - The marshmallow sucks too! What a mess that USED to be!
Setting up a properly functioning resin casting shop is cheap and simple. All you need is a compressor, pressure tank, a pile of legos and sheet plastic to make pour boxes, some clay, a cup, and a stir stick! The toughest part is the one between the ears - figuring out how the resin will flow in and air out.
-
Very nice and authentic build! Those Tamiya Minis are sweet little kits to build.

Forget Vacuum. Vacuum sucks. Pressure casting is the best and much cheaper and easier way to do it. All you need is a paint pressure pot which can be found at any good hardware or industrial supply store and an air compressor. When you pour your silicon for molds and when you fill your molds with resin just put them in the pot and pressurise to 30-40 psi. Do not remove either until they have cured. This is by far the easiest and cheapest way to reliably cast resin. I have been using pressure casting for 20 years and can not recommend anything else. Fell free to e-mail me if you have more questions about the process.

There certainly was a 69 Trans Am but not many. Check it out at www.transamworld.com

Numero Uno - Subject Matter!! I don't care if that new Chevette 4-door with the woody decals on the side kit is the most accurate and well-engineered kit ever in the history of model cars - It is boring and I don't want it!
Sure, the old 3 in 1 kits were great but if I don't want the subject it won't matter if it has 30 in 1 options.
Price is not a huge issue for me as long there is some value for the money spent. One of my favorite kits is the one I paid the most for! It is a 1/12 scale white metal kit of the Britten battle of the twins racebike. It is awesome and is one of favorite motorcycles. It was up around 2 bills.
I like accuracy and well-engineered kits as much as the next guy. It won't get me to buy it unless I want that car, too. The Tamiya Enzos are fabulous but I don't do Ferraris. I do have all Tamiya 1/24 Porsches in multiples! Even the happy-go-fun motorized cars! The new Revell Merc and 55 Chevs are great kits but I have not bought one of them because the subject is out of my area of interest. I may get one of the 58s when they come out because I like that car!

ooooohhhh is THAT what that is in my A bottle. I been trying to figure it out for a week now. All the sudden one day it was starting to crystalize.
I had some goofy reaction but was still able to cast decent parts.
My Pur A Kast never did that and I recently switched to Smooth On 320 so I never experienced that before.
My resin guy has told me that theoretically you can warm up the A and get the moisture out but have never tried it. I am sceptical to say the least and don't like chemical fires and fumes, etc.
-
Resin and rubber set-up and cure from the heat produced by chemical reaction. The cold temps kill the heat and then kill the curing resulting from the heat. I once filled a mold with resin and left it in temps like you described and came back the next day and the resin had set-up enough to get it out of the mold but was still very soft. I could take the casting ( it was a bodyshell) and crush it into a ball with my hand and lay the ball on the table. 10 minutes later it unfolded itself and resumed it's original shape! You could do it over and over! I don't know if I could ever duplicate that result again!
Moisture is more of a problem for resin shelf life than for a one-time casting situation. In Urethanes it will turn the A part into gravy eventually.

I say model because of cheezy engine detail particularly fuel lines and rad. hoses. It all seems very model-ish to me!
The builder must be a Dan Gurney fan with those #48s on the door!

Cool.. do You take Pay Pal???
Saw that at the heartland show.. the Cad is the coloest thing since the 57 chevy flopper of McEwen..
Thanks Dwayne! I have a Paypal shopping cart on my website. My webguy is just getting the cadillac and T on the shopping cart but I can always send an Paypal invoice to you if you like.

Nice scans but was the Econoline ever kitted? My dad had a "hot rodded" Econoline with a 302/c4, big castle painted on the side.
No econolines that I have ever heard of. Sounds like a good resin project for someone! Not me.

Hand deliver here in Hawaii please :-)
Are you sure the magazine can afford a round trip first class ticket for me and my wife to hand deliver it? I would be happy to give you the kit in that situation!

AMT's Silhouette and trailer... good for parts only IMHO.
That is like waving a red flag at a bull! I will be starting mine soon then!
-
Where's mine?????
Where do you want it?

I was perusing old car mags from my Wall O'Mags and found this and thought I would share it with the class. So you can see that a Falcon Econoline van is more appropriate than the Bronco that MK used!
If you want the full scans e-mail me and I can send them. It's almost 4mb!

I think a fun model car challenge would be racecars sponsored by "BAD" products. How cool would it be to have a Crystal Meth sponsored NASCAR entry or Acapulco Gold sponsored drift car! The possibilities are endless UZI, Lawn Darts, Diet Crack! Trans-fat top fueler!

Our colorful former Minnesota Governor Jesse"The Body" Ventura who was Independence party called them Demo-crips and Re-blood-icans referencing the well known street gangs!

I finally got my act together and have my 59 Cadillac convert funnycar "Cad-attack!" and the 1915 Center door sedan fuel altered "T-Rex" available. These are both conversion kits that require the use of a Revell funny car kit to complete. You can check them out at my website or at my Ebay store. Thanks.

Oh believe me when I say my undies are not bunched. I am quite used to it. You can slam Democrats all you want because I do also. I do it because they are too timid and centrist for my taste. You did say over-educated lefties, however. I do take exception to name-calling because it overly polarizes any discussion. It pisses me off, too!
I think another big factor in the "forbidden" controversy is the legal liability issues. Too many plaintiffs found lawyers who would file a suit for them because they were too stupid to figure out that smoking is bad for you or drinking heavily will destroy your liver and make you a dangerous driver. Of course they want a piece of the deep pockets that the cigarette and alcohol companies have. Then there are the people who think the cigarette companies are to blame for their kids smoking instead of looking in the mirror.
When you get down to it mankind is just a motley collection of hairless apes. I no longer expect logic and intelligence to win out on a regular basis on any issue.
Enough bla bla bla from me. Back to model cars for me!

I saw him at a Hillside show in Chicago in the early 80s and asked him what kind of resin he was using. He said "plastic". He seemed very proud of himself and his product. It was weird.

There is another facet of " Models That Scare You". Conceptual. Forgetting for a minute complexity and quality issues. I am aghast at things that have appeared over the years like "Travolta Fever Firebird" "Jolly Rodger", anything Donk or Dub, "Peanut I -Quarter Mile Smile" There is plenty out there that will bring up someone's lunch!

A Birdcage Maserati would be cool.
HMMMMM!!!!!!! Like this?

I am still jonesing for a 51 Studebaker Starlight coupe!

Help? Ha!
I have vastly more experience resin casting and was presenting ideas for others to use which simplify the process. I was actually being helpful for those willing to listen and try new ideas. All you offered were platitudes about how tough it is and how expensive it is. Give me a break!
I am NOT your buddy and am NOT "Big Guy". Spare me your overfamiliarity and attempted condesencion. You know what the score is between us.
