rick6343 Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 I have the recent issue AMT '58 Edsel kit, and was wondering what engine that is. It doesn't seem to be an MEL, as described by Tim Boyd in his series of articles for that other magazine, and it's a scale 3 inches shorter than any of the 1/25 scale FE engine blocks I can find. Thanks,

Thanks, The link below should be of help to you. I don't know what an MEL is, (Mercury Edsel Lincoln?) but the ones in the link look most like Mercury engines of the era. http://www.edsel.com/pages/edsel58.htm#Engines
lordairgtar Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 (edited) 1958 Edsel Part Interchange List All Models - The E-400 used the same major components as the 1958 Ford, including water and fuel pumps, heads and exhaust manifolds. The E-475 is similar to the 1958-1961 Lincoln and Mercury 430 cid V8. All parts will fit, except the pistons, which are 0.100 inches larger in the 430. The Mercury 383 engine is also a similar match, except for the carburetor, crankshaft and pistons. The 383 carburetor will fit the E-475, but expect a 5-15% drop in horsepower. Transmissions for the E-475 are compatable with the 1958 Lincoln. Pumps and tail housing controls are a match on the 1958 Mercury single-drive range, but the transmission case is not because of Mercury's push-button shifting control. Citation/Corsair - Windshield, doors and side glass can be found on the 1957 and 1958 Mercury of the same body type. (Rear glass is unique to Edsel.) Wheel rims are identical to 1957 to 1960 Mercury. 410 Engine exhaust manifold to muffler inlet gasket is identical to the current Nissan gasket number 20692-1E810. Pacer/Ranger - Doors and all glass can be found on the 1957 and 1958 Ford Fairlane and Fairlane 500 models of the same body type. Wheel rims are identical to 1957 to 1960 Mercury. Bermuda/Villager/Roundup - Sheetmetal from the firewall back is the same as the 1957 Ford wagons. Doors and all glass is the same as the 1958 Ford wagons. The front doors can also be found on the 1957 and 1958 Ford Custom and Custom 300 sedans. Wheel rims are identical to 1957 and 1958 Ford. Edited February 18, 2008 by lordairgtar
John Goschke Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 The engine in the AMT Edsel Pacer is supposed to be an "E400" 361 c.i.d. FE engine. Externally similar (if not identical) to the 300 hp. 352 c.i.d. Ford engine that debuted in 1958. I have the Edsel kit and the engine looked a little small to me too, but I'm used to looking at the various FE engines from the AMT annual kits of the early '60s, which might be overscale. For a similar engine in a modern AMT kit we should compare the Edsel motor with engines from the recent '60 Starliner (352 c.i.d.) and '62 T-bird (390 c.i.d.). I'll check it out when I get home tonight.
