Rear shocks

When installing rear shocks, is there a preferred way to orient the shocks? My brief research shows pictures with the fat part up, toward the body on some installations, and down, away from the body on others.

Depends upon the car. Mounting varies on different vehicle.

Fat part goes up. It's a shield for the piston inside. Mount it the other way round and it would soon fill with water and debris and fail.

and front shocks without the shields would be mounted differently.

So the answer really depends on the application. Mounting ends are also different.
