Clay Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I don't know if this has already been done but I am gonna try to paint a whole model with Color Place spray paint (Wal-Mart Brand) I will post pics of it later on.
Raul_Perez Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Clay, You might try spraying the under-side of the hood or some other inconspicuous place first. Most spray paints are not formulated for plastic, and can really make a mess of the plastic surface if they're too "hot". Some of them will actually mottle the surface of the plastic...and that's not something that can be fixed by stripping the paint. You need to find a source for the Testors lacquer spray paints. They are amazingly easy to use and the results are great. Let me know if you don't have a local source and I'll look into sending you some. I'm not sure, but I think that that postal service forbids the shipment of spray cans through the mail. Regards,

RatRod Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Yep, UPS is the only way you can send any kind of paint!!! The post office will kick your hiney out the door....
Clay Posted February 22, 2008 Author Posted February 22, 2008 As soon as I remember where I put the bag I will read what it says it can be used on, should have done that at Wally World but oh well.
MrObsessive Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 YES!! The advice Raul gives is very sound! ALWAYS test out paint before you try it on an entire model! Especially with today's newer softer plastic, that is a MUST. I can tell you that if you're building anything by Revell molded from 2004 to present, I'd especially be careful of the soft plastic they're using now. Under the hood, or maybe even just the sprue itself can give you an idea of how the paint will react.

I found the bag, and the cans say nothing about plastic, but I did spray it on an empty parts tree to see what it does. Might try different layers to see how many it will go
Clay Posted February 22, 2008 Author Posted February 22, 2008 (edited) Well it is being sprayed on a parts tree from 1967, I will try it on a newer one, but it is working good on the old one. I got it cause it is fast drying and it was $.96 Ok I just sprayed it on the inside of the 1970 Super Bee Pro Street, 2004, We will see what happens. Edited February 22, 2008 by jones_clayton

Clay, I've also used some inexpensive paint from Ace Hardware. Their "Now" brand. The first coats went on fine and looked good. The stuff even polished out pretty well. The only problem I found was that you COULD NOT recoat it after about 12 hours. If you did, you ended up with a curdled mess that looked like you have sprayed a hot lacquer over enamel. Fortunately, it did not damage the plastic. Good luck,
MrObsessive Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Clay, you may want to run the gamut of the painting process to see how the paint will hold up to polishing, clearcoating, etc. Some paints for instance don't like clearcoat on them unless it's the very mildest of stuff. (ie: Tamiya water based acrylic clear) Nothing's more frustating to me than to have a botched paint job-------especially considering how long it takes me to get a model together with the detail I like to do.
evilone Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 USE KRYLON ITS THE GOD OF WAL-FART PAINT I USE IT AND IT COMES OUT VERY GOOD MOST OF MY MODELS ARE COVERED IN IT

I got the clearcoat of the stuff, I might use it on a camero body that I wont be using, just to see how it would do.
Rudy Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I got the clearcoat of the stuff, I might use it on a camero body that I wont be using, just to see how it would do. HAHA..... Yeah, that is all Camaros are good for. Possibly catastrophic testing of paints. Do you know what Carmaros stands for? Car And Motor Are Ratty Old ######...... Rudy

Camaro may have went away for now, but WE NEVER had a Camaro II!!! NUFF SAID!!! Edited February 22, 2008 by camaroman
Clay Posted February 23, 2008 Author Posted February 23, 2008 Camaro may have went away for now, but WE NEVER had a Camaro II!!! Now that was funny, however I still like the mustangs and cameros, well all muscle cars really.
Raul_Perez Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 Now that was funny, however I still like the mustangs and cameros, well all muscle cars really. I'll second that!! OMG, what would a Camaro II look like, a Vega on steroids?
Clay Posted February 23, 2008 Author Posted February 23, 2008 Now back to the topic at hand, The paint is working good so far, I just need to try it when its not so humid out. I'm gonna go and try the clear on it.
Clay Posted February 24, 2008 Author Posted February 24, 2008 Well here are the results, it has a base, a color coat, and a clear coat, plus Future floor polish
Raul_Perez Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 It looks pretty shiny!! Is that a keeper or a test mule?
Clay Posted February 24, 2008 Author Posted February 24, 2008 It looks pretty shiny!! Is that a keeper or a test mule? Thats a spare NASCAR body I had lying around
RJWood Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 Hello Clay, Just want to say I've used that Color-place ( wal-mart brand) paint and have never really had any problems. I really like the gray primer Cheep and effective. I use the flat black also with decent results. the gloss colors I use on interiors and then hit it with some simi-gloss or flat clear and have never had no bad reactions. It is enamel paint, like the regular Testors enamel. Good luck with your project. Ron
