MAGIC MUFFLER Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Finally dusted off one of my Willys that have been on the shelf for many yrs. What I noticed was that the tips of the headers are all crusty. I used a soldering tube and have no idea what this stuff is. It's pretty hard stuff and not sure how to get this crud off. Any ideas ???? Thank you
10thumbs Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Hi Bill,These are some good looking Gassers. The dusty ones are cool too, like a garage find! The solder rods have probably leaked the flux that's inside of them. I can't say though how to get rid of the mess, sorry. I used solder rods for headers on a 33 Willys I built last year, I placed the rods in boiling water to get rid of the flux beforehand. Do you think the crust can be scraped off with a scalpel blade?Again, nice looking, cleanly built models.Michael
MAGIC MUFFLER Posted August 7, 2015 Author Posted August 7, 2015 I did try to scrape it off. It's on pretty good! I'll try something else and maybe I can dissolve it off.
Jon Cole Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 (edited) Acid core solder. I found out the hard way never to use it again. Edited August 8, 2015 by Jon Cole
slusher Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 (edited) The Willy looks great dusted off. I would take some Mothers wheel cleaner and brush a little on a spot with paint brush. Mothers is not strong but i believe some wheel cleaner might help... Edited August 8, 2015 by slusher
