Harry P. Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 So the other day the local PBS station aired a concert that took place in late 2014 to honor George Harrison. Lots of big names doing covers of George's best songs... his son Dhani was on stage (he looks and sounds exactly like his dad!)... but of all people, Weird Al Yankovic did a pretty straightforward (no comedy or parody) version of "What is Life?" I have never seen Weird Al do a "straight" interpretation of a song, and yeah, his on-stage antics were a little over the top, but he did the song pretty much seriously...
Harry P. Posted May 17, 2016 Author Posted May 17, 2016 Lots of really good Harrison covers. Another unexpected one... Conan O'Brien doing "Old Brown Shoe!"
Harry P. Posted May 17, 2016 Author Posted May 17, 2016 The best one, IMO. Ann Wilson doing "Beware of Darkness." If you're a fan of George Harrison's music, check out Georgefest on youtube. Of course, these videos taken by people on their cell phones from the audience have pretty krappy sound. The PBS special had flawless sound.
Harry P. Posted May 17, 2016 Author Posted May 17, 2016 Another good one... Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction doing a version of "Here Comes the Sun" that's pretty faithful to the Beatles' original...
Roadrunner Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 The best I've seen on this subject, is the concert for George, which I have on DVD. Once you get past the Hare Krishna garbage, the rest is great.
Harry P. Posted May 17, 2016 Author Posted May 17, 2016 The only Hare Krishna mentions were in the song "My Sweet Lord," done by the Beach Boys, of all people! Well, not all the Beach Boys; just two of them (Brian Wilson and Al Jardine).
