Dalton Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 Hi. So I'm new to the whole model car experience. Just finished my first one, 1955 ford pickup Street rod, and fell in love with the newfound hobby so I went I started another project, a 1967 Shelby gt350. Anyways, I bought a box of spare parts at a flea market the other day. Inside is a revell 37 ford coupe body. I would love to do it but there is no frames in the box. So my question is, are the frames specially made for each car or can I take one from another project. If not. Where can I find the frame for this particular car. Thank you for your time. Look forward to hearing from you.
AC Norton Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 Dalton, members here may be able to help if you post your need's in the WANTED section.......failing that, Ebay always has lot's of part's, started kit's, you name it, and getting a frame and such should be quick and easy, it's a common kit......hope this help's...the Ace...
disabled modeler Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 If all else fails you can find another frame that could be used for it from another model at times. Another option is to make one yourself if possible..?..it can be challenging to do though. Id place a post under the wanted thread here for one and see what happens.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 (edited) In the real-car world, frames are made specifically for each type of car, and in the model-car world as well. In the hot-rod and racing car end of the real-car world, frames are sometimes swapped from other vehicles and sometimes specially built for a particular purpose. This is really an oversimplification, but the point is that it's entirely possible to use a frame from one model car under another one if the basics of frame design (for example, is a frame a ladder-type, or a tubular "spaceframe", or is the car of "unibody" construction), and length, width, wheelbase and track-width are kept in mind.In your case, the '37 Ford uses a simple ladder-type frame with roughly parallel main side rails. From 1935 through 1940, all Ford cars (and light trucks through '41) used almost identical frames, so any of those in kit form would give you a reasonable starting point. Many of those vehicles were done as kits, so the "wanted" section might give you some leads...but it will be a lot easier if you're just starting out to get the frame designed for the kit you have. There are 3 versions of the '37 Ford as kits from Revell / Monogram, and any of the frames would work fine for you. There's rather a lot to know, and if you're interested in learning how real cars work, how they're made, and how they're modified, there's no better place to get started than by building model cars.If you want to know more about car frames in general, read this for a brief introduction: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_frame Edited January 4, 2017 by Ace-Garageguy
Dalton Posted January 5, 2017 Author Posted January 5, 2017 Thank all of you. I will definitely keep my eye out for a frame that will work. I looked through all the pieces and the frame is unfortunately the only thing I'm missing. Once again. Thank you guys.
