back in high school, my shop teacher was good buds with the guy in charge of disposal at chrysler. we had the dohc hemi on a engine stand. he had a copy of the artice from car craft attached to it. we got to take it apart and put it back together. he sold it to a guy who collected hemis for a large sum.

Are you sure there's only two of those DOHC hemis? - you just never know when another one of those might show up

Fantastic looking Dart! Great use of the engine too.

There is always more than a 'few' of any kind of special engine produced by the big 3 and I believe well over 100 of the DOHC engines were around at the time and lots of them 'expired' under hard treatment & testing and others simply just 'disappeared'...One well known Chevy racer got his hands on a couple even tho he was a diehard Chevy man and he even had special Ford engines hidden away in the back of his shop and after his death, an auction held at his shop was with quite a few surprises of complete engines & super rare parts and of course with no doubts, a few ended up with several drag racers & stashed away in Chrysler Nascar shops in case the DOHC would make a comeback or someone could build an even better Hemi using the parts as if that was possible!

It is not a new concept, It's been around for a over 100 years. And it was Ford who is considered to have the American V8 Hemi with their AM Ardun Flathead head.

Actually Cal, Ford didn't make nor offer the Ardun conversion, that waz designed and manufactured by an independent engineer, Zora Ar kus Dun tov, as an Aftermarket Conversion for the Flathead Ford engine. The same guy who designed the "thin wall" Chevrolet SB - 265 cu. in. engine . BTW Zora offered "his" engine to Ford first, they turned the design down due to it's inherrently weak main bearing web structures and the placement of the crankshaft centerline in-line with the bottom surface of the block (Ford was correct about the design's weaknesses) but they didn't see the value (missed it) of the production savings (costs) in thin wall castings. Ford's first True thin-wall casting waz the 260/289 series engines.

That is what AM stands for....

That is some great info, Harry. I wonder how the DOHC Hemi would that look under the hood of Lindberg's Petty 64 Chrysler? That would make a sweet "what if" racer.

How about building one and showing us how it would look??? :o

You know I would, but I don't have the Petty Plymouth or the DOHC Hemi parts to do it. Besides I'm not much of a NASCAR builder, I like my Hot rods, street machines, and gassers.

I'll leave the Idea on the table of somebody that does.
