Twokidsnosleep Posted April 8, 2017 Posted April 8, 2017 (edited) I have not done an auto build for a while....many reasons and other interests This Porsche 911 is a 1/24 scale from eBay a few years ago. My joke is it was only $6.... and $14 in shipping. End of March I decided it was time to pull it out of its plastic bag and bring it back to life Edited July 14, 2017 by Twokidsnosleep Photobucket jerks
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 8, 2017 Author Posted April 8, 2017 (edited) Been so long I have forgotten how to post photos and navigate posts here...but I will make due. This should be all the before photos attatched now. Oh yeah, it was a Monogram kit, mid 80ish Porsche turbo convertible slant nose. Missing the rear deck and spoiler Edited April 8, 2017 by Twokidsnosleep
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 8, 2017 Author Posted April 8, 2017 (edited) This is what really got me going...some Fujimi 19" BBS mags and tires I popped on. Once I saw that, it was THIS is now a project. Fujimi makes some really great wheel and tire combos btw Interior goes for a dip into the lemon scent oven cleaner gel Edited April 8, 2017 by Twokidsnosleep
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 8, 2017 Author Posted April 8, 2017 (edited) Cool. Still making it into a targa ?We shall see how that goes, don't wanna get too far ahead of myselfIt is a little/big project if you catch my drift...and inspired by your build thread for sure Edited April 16, 2017 by Twokidsnosleep
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 8, 2017 Author Posted April 8, 2017 (edited) Next the car body goes for a soak and then peel off. Paint was very thick with clear coat overtop and what looks like auto body primer underneath Causulties included cutting off the windshield frame before it got destroyed and I broke driver's mirror. You can see the thick paint, I just got a tool under there and peeled it off. Next step is a media blasting with a micro etcher to remove primer and any more paint. Twokidsnosleep Posted April 8, 2017 Author Posted April 8, 2017 (edited) Here we go....media blasted Porsche Similar to what they do with the real cars, aluminum oxide microetcher Edited July 14, 2017 by Twokidsnosleep
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 8, 2017 Author Posted April 8, 2017 (edited) Wheels look great. I have extra mirrors if neede. Thanks Andre....I will salvage the one I brokeWere the mirrors on your kit moulded on or cemented??For me, wheels make or break a car Edited April 8, 2017 by Twokidsnosleep
Ron Hamilton Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 That s a lot of work going there. I have a Porsche 911 that I should re-build that I built back in the 90's. The paint job on it is less than stellar, and I believe that I have most of the parts. Your work is tempting me.I can't wait to see the finished product.
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 10, 2017 Author Posted April 10, 2017 (edited) Thanks Ron, will tryThe micro etcher thing is a HUGE help.....it is actually pretty fun to watch that paint just peel right off. Heck of a mess though Edited April 10, 2017 by Twokidsnosleep
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 16, 2017 Author Posted April 16, 2017 (edited) Got the engine and transmission out and soaked in the oven cleaner. The chrome on the engine block and parts literally melted away almost immediately. The black painted area took just a couple hours. There was a lot of yellow cement present and thankfully most weakened and let parts come off and/or scraped away easily Edited July 14, 2017 by Twokidsnosleep
Funkychiken Posted April 16, 2017 Posted April 16, 2017 That's a lot of effort to strip, but it came out really nicely...
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 16, 2017 Author Posted April 16, 2017 Thank you, it has been a bit of work for sureWe shall see how happy I am with it when I get the first bit of primer onIt feels pretty smooth, but you know how that goes Scott
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 24, 2017 Author Posted April 24, 2017 (edited) Tried a silicone mould and resin cast of a Fujimi kit's rear engine cover and spoiler to try and replace the missing one from my kit. First time I have tried this. Last pic is the rough fitment with lots to trim, add to and refine, but this should be workable Edited August 16, 2017 by Twokidsnosleep
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 24, 2017 Author Posted April 24, 2017 Cool work on the casting. That's cool Thanks bud Got inspired as I could not find a replacement engine cover/wing on eBay so decided to use some stuff from work and give it a go. That is a dental acrylic resin wing Have lots of flash and mis cast areas to smooth out, but is a better start than full on scratch building the wing. I will do another photo when I am happy with it.
Twokidsnosleep Posted August 7, 2017 Author Posted August 7, 2017 (edited) Spent some time with the Porsche this afternoon Putting the engine block and transmission back together Used a combo of Tamiya flat aluminum and Gunze aluminum...just to try for subtle shade variations. Then a wash with Mig dark wash and some Ammo engine oil Edited August 7, 2017 by Twokidsnosleep
DumpyDan Posted August 7, 2017 Posted August 7, 2017 Looking good so far. Funny thing I started working on one of these Porsche hard top Turbo 2 weeks ago, it was missing a lot of parts so I looked through my stash because I new I had a convertible glue bomb same as the one your working on. This is the first time I have ever built a Porsche of any kind, I am making mine none turbo and waiting for the paint to dry, It is not a bad kit was fun to build can't wait to see your finished.
Twokidsnosleep Posted August 7, 2017 Author Posted August 7, 2017 Thanks Dan....I seem to be taking the long, slow and stupidly hard road of refurbishing. Not sure why, but I do find it satisfying to restore the bombs.
Twokidsnosleep Posted August 15, 2017 Author Posted August 15, 2017 (edited) Think I have decided on a body colour ...Tamiya Metallic Blue Engine is pretty much done Holy cow these are big pictures, sorry. I will post them from flickr next time and reduce the size more...otherwise you can see all my mistakes Edited August 15, 2017 by Twokidsnosleep
Mixalz Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 Nice work so far. Love the use of dental products; makes this hobby much easier! May I ask what exactly what resin it was? I've contemplated that but wasn't sure if I could get it to flow far enough into a mold.I may have to order some in. Cheers,Michael

Sorry again about those enormous photosThat specific material is Structur 2 SC by Voco... a self curing composite material for crown and bridge. It is an auto mix syringe type delivery so allows you to squirt right into a channel in the mould.... vs spatula mixing which dentistry has moved away from in many casesThe products are not cheap, but are readily available to me, so I used what I have. Worked OK ish Edited August 15, 2017 by Twokidsnosleep
