Iroc crazy Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 Wondering what type of model cement for joining parts togetherAny help with this greatly appreciated
MrObsessive Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 Josh, that's a loaded question as everyone will have their favorites. Personally, I like to use liquid glues such as Bondene, Tamiya, or one that's available online from Micro Mark called "Same Stuff". It was called that as they used to sell Ambroid Pro Weld, but that brand is no longer.Others like to use regular tube glue, but I'm not a big fan of this because.............1) Drying time2) Messiness in applying it3) The glue can continue to "eat" into the plastic years after applying it.Others can chime in, but one should have a variety of glues on hand for different tasks. White glue or 5 min epoxy for putting in windows, or attaching outside body parts.Super glues for general construction."Semi Liquid Glue" (Testors) when you need something to hold, but don't want the too thick tube glue, or the pure liquid stuff which is best applied with some kind of applicator.Hope all this helps!
Iroc crazy Posted May 24, 2017 Author Posted May 24, 2017 I've noticed that one time assembling a model the cement I used actually did weaken the plastic do you know what amt recommends for their models I should've clarified that my mistake thank you for the advice

1972coronet Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 Model cement is essentially a "cold weld" (a term for the chemical-reaction between the adhesive and the parts it's bonding-together . In other words , the cement ( glue , et al. ) does indeed melt the styrene (the cold-weld) , and then catalyses ( dries ) in "x" timeframe ."Super Glue" ( et al. ) works differently ; there's no melting of the surfaces it comes in-contact with . These glues are acrylic ( "CA" = Cyanoacrylate ) ; their 'setup' time varies ( e.g. , "Quick Set" , etc. ).With all glues which are indicated for use in bonding polystrene , the adage is "A little bit is too much." . In other words , don't apply more glue than necessary . Personally , I favour Tamiya glue ( the orange lid liquid for general assemblies ; the green lid for gluing parts which are clamped or banded together ) .
Iroc crazy Posted May 25, 2017 Author Posted May 25, 2017 Thank you very much for your help with this matter greatly appreciated
