Dieselhead Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 Hey guys, just started on the Tamiya King Tiger (production turret) and I can't find a full paint list. I could mark everything from the book, but if anyone has a total list of all the paints required that'd be great.Of course, tips with the kit would be handy since I just got the barebones done (lower hull and suspension). How does paint apply to the Zimmerit? Anything to worry about? Many thanks.
Lizz62 Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 (edited) The way I paint German tanks is an approximate color match because no two tigers were ever painted the same and probably never the same shade. Usually , the weathering changes most colors anyhow. Edited May 31, 2017 by Lizz62
Lizz62 Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 (edited) This zimmerit is hand applied. I used fast dry spackle and the tip of a small flat screwdriver. You can chip it in spots to simulate hits.as for paint , I use water based art paint from AC Moore for about a dollar a bottle . mixes good drys great looks good and flat for military stuff. Dieselhead Posted May 31, 2017 Author Posted May 31, 2017 I really don't think I have the hand-eye prowess to do it homebrew, I was planning on just buying the little Zimmerit addon parts from Tamiya and sticking those on there. Still haven't decided on a paint scheme yet.
LDO Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 Hard to go wrong with Ambush paint scheme. I think a cool "what-if?" model would be a late war tank done a fictional winter ambush scheme. White and shades of gray with tiny white dots to simulate blowing snow.LOTS of different ways to do Zimmerit. There are purpose-built tools for pressing it into putty or softened plastic. (Soften with a solvent glue).
Agent G Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 (edited) Dark yellow, red brown and some shade of green. Nothing specific required (as stated) as weathering will change the colors. The King Tigers in the Ardennes did not have zim. They were mostly brand new, having been saved for the winter offensive. That's always an option. Tamiya's own zimmerit is fairly easy to work with. I used it on a mid production Tiger I. G Edited June 1, 2017 by Agent G
Dieselhead Posted June 2, 2017 Author Posted June 2, 2017 So I've actually gone ahead and decided what I'm gonna do paint-wise. The tank is now tank-shaped, the hull is done, as is the turret (minus the spare track mounting lugs, what a pain!), sans zimmerit. I've concluded I'm going to do a 2-color ambush scheme with octopus rings. The main colors will be Panzer dark yellow, and german red-brown, and standard dark brown for the octopus rings. That's all later though, as I have to buy all that stuff. Silly me to start a model and not even have primer!
Dieselhead Posted June 6, 2017 Author Posted June 6, 2017 So I took the last couple days and went ahead and finished this up. This is the only good picture of it I have right now, I'll go and get some more later. For my first tank I'm pretty proud of it, and I really enjoyed building it. I suspect I'll be doing more in the future.
redneckrigger Posted June 7, 2017 Posted June 7, 2017 Wow....................that looks tremendous. VERY nice weathering and detail work!
