Alclad Candy colors

I´ve read on instructions that the 701 silver base is a must for the 700 series Candy Colors.

Is it really, or would any silver base work?

You might be able to use some other paint supplier for a base coat, but I wouldn't. Beyond trying to sell you their base paint there can be chemical reactions between different paint suppliers. First of all you can be pretty sure that the base and Candy color will work together and should give you the best final finish. As with any multiple coat paint job there is a lot that can go wrong. If you are not already trying your paint on plastic spoons now would be a good time to start. I can't tell you how many times I have saved painting disasters, A plastic spoon cost next to nothing to through away as opposed to stripping a paint job on a model.
