The reason for the large bumper is because this truck has a PTO that is driven from the front of the engine crankshaft. This PTO mounts in front of the radiator, between the frame rails. Thanks for the explanation! Modeltruckbuilder gave it before but he deleted his post in the meantime. I have no idea why because it was correct. I would like to add that today the most common solution is a bit different. Today all parts sit between cab and drum. The hydaulic pump is now driven via transmission - auxiliary drive -short prop shaft. Pump and hydraulic motor are connected by short hydraulic lines.
