slant6 Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 I was just reading an article, in Car and Driver, of all magazines. The author said that he has a wall in his garage, with all the empty boxes from models he's built. Am I wrong for throwing away the boxes? Do you all hate me now? C'mon, I live in an apartment. My other question, how do you decide when its time to trash an old model? Ive got one on the shelf, which is almost full, that's a little busted and not all that great, but I cant bring myself to throw it out. Am I wrong?
Rob Hall Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 I've never thrown any kit boxes out...I keep the box to store the kit in when it's built. I keep everything...

I used to hang on to all the boxes, but then I started getting to many empty boxes laying around so I pitch them. I saved a few for spare parts and things, and the aircraft ones with nice art work I will cut the tops and save the art. when they get beyond displaying: broken, unrepairable, or just not that good I will strip it down for anything usefull and trash the rest. It doesn't happen very often though. I have also sold or given away some models I built over the years. I have two in museums.
evilone Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 yo if you dont want some old models i will be more then glad to take them off your hands bro and trust me they will be going to a good home i dont trash models i restore them
62SS Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 I never throw model boxes away. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to buy some old built up models at an estate sale. They were all from the late 50s thru late 60s, SMPs, AMTs, MPCs, Etc... The built cars were all put back into their original boxes with all of the unused parts, Instructions, And decals. I thought that was really cool, Kinda like a time capsule. Since then, I display my builts till I need more room, Then I put them back in the box, And store them in my model room closet. This also keeps them from getting broken. If any parts fall off, They are right there in the box to be reattached. Also I never throw models away. Even old flea market glue bombs or cars with missing parts can be used as parts for other builds. Ed
sdrodder Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 i always get rid of some of my model boxes except if the have great are on them. About the model. Just strip of some parts that u can probably use and the rest just give it away. Probably someone out there can use it even if it is junk. hey u can use some plastic of off it if you have to. I myself am always one the look out for stuff that people call junk. Last time i ended up with 2 black widow pickups, bettle body, t bucket build that was in bad condition 57 ford with styline parts, red chariot parts car, and more and for him it was just plain junk. Well for me it wasnt. I restor them now.
