Funny this popped up recently and caught me in the middle of a new build, which I guess would fit this theme. I think . . .

This is something I'm calling PAINKILLER, and it started with these:

Then I got carried away and did this:

IMG_0007-vi.jpg

And THAT lead to this:

There are plenty of in-progress shots in my Fotki, if you follow this link:

I was not happy with the hue of the rust, so I put a bit more orange into it . . .

IMG_0002-vi.jpg

After the paint dried for an hour or so, I brought out Mr. Masking Sol and my salt, then started adding both (Mr. Masking Sol first--wait for it to dry!) and then a sprikling of salt here and there.

IMG_8-vi.jpg

IMG_0008-vi.jpg

We'll see what happens when the final body colors go on . . . as I will try to fog the basic colors over everything in order not to lose the shadows nor the rusting in certain places . . . but I want the pockmarks of body damage to show through, thus the mask and salt.

Stay tuned in for more!

Thanks, folks, most of the morning has gone into mixing up paints, just to get a few variations from light to dark . . . which is why I use 1oz bottles with York tops. They allow me to mix the colors accordingly.

Yellows, khahis, sand, light brown . . . and white to lighten . . .

Here's a shot fresh out of the paintbooth:

IMG_0001-vi.jpg

The salt is used for some subtle speckling and chipping . . .

IMG_0002-vi.jpg

I've also added a few scratches here and there, again nothing major . . . .

Looks like 15 of us now, and here's the rules from page 2 of this thread. (with some added clarification from ######'n B in blue-from comments along the way) Read em over, and if everbody

is cool with em, start posting pics of your unbuilt kits, or whatever you're starting with on Friday, August 22 in "On the Workbench" under "Death Race Build Off"--somebody want the honor of being first? being the one to create the 'DRBO' thread?

________________________________________________________________________________

_________

ground rules

so far this is what we have (if every one agrees)

objective: to build a car that could (or has) compete in a demolition derby type free for all race. armed with horse power and fire power the car will need to be able to destroy opponents it cant outrun? Curbside models are acceptable, if not preferred as it's all about external appearance

the vehicle: anything civilian of your own choice, hot rod, import, american muscle, car, truck, suv or econobox, unbuilt kit, gluebomb, or shelf sitter to start with. as long as it is not a militry kit

scale: anything goes? (i would prefer a 1/24-1/25 scale to level the playing field but that is just me)

armour: home made or kit bashed, basically anything goes.

build time: we start on august 22 end by december 31? Official start in "on the workbench" on Aughust 22 to conincide with the opening of the movie, with posts of what we're starting with (seems like plenty of time to me but this is my first build of too so...)

records: i say we show WIP pics at every important step as well as one or two shots of the unstarted kit. i would also say we write a little biography of the car to explain the choice of car, armour and modifications (just so we can fully explain what we did to it)

This build has me intrigued.

Since I'm not going to be able to finish my Impala build on another board, count me in too please.

I don't know which kit I'll use yet though. This may get me out of my slump.

Probably can't touch Cranky's work though.

Hey ALLGOSUO do you have the instructions for the Californian ? I have been trying to find a copy of them for along time . I got one in a bag and that was all I got . Anyway I could get a copy of them from you ? That is a hard to find kit .

I, for one, is excited to get started and finish a kit (finally)

and be in a build off.

SO, Speed and weapons are very important.

Armour plating and Roadworthiness but no Off-Roading required?

Can we start now?

Can we?

Can we?

Eh?

Eh?

Start? Start? Oh yeah, start!

Here are some pictures of some of the paint accents . . . I wanted to break up all the grungy green . . . so I remasked all the rust in the front, then cut a mask with a Fiskars pattern scissor and sprayed the orange in light coats, fading as I went along . . .

IMG_2-vi.jpg

Also, I made the scratmarks where the chain will ride on the hood . . . I hope it can be seen in this picture . . .
