bitner Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 This one I just finished last night. I scratch built almost all of the wrecker body and booms, save the winch and cut down side pieces from an AMT Pete wrecker. I made the decals except for the flames.
Eshaver Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 I bet you that wrecker , the real one if there is one rides rough as you know what!!!!!!!!!!!! Still, the turning radius would be great as the cab could turn onit self. I wqould like to see a real one and talk to someone whose had experence with the real thing. All the "Big " wreckers I ever drove were conventional cabs because in that big of a truck , they ride is very rough. With something behind weeeeeelllll................. Still, its a beautiful job you did on the model, I have family that worked for Shell Oil at one time. I used to be a wrecker driver - owner too. EdShaver
Ayatollah Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 I drove an International cabover wrecker about that wheelbase and it got into tight spots. That was a kidneybeater, but not as bad as you would expect. Loaded down really heavy, the steering got weird and I could not get used to that. Jacking up the airride wouldn't quite get it.
ultraliner13 Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 I see a great model here. You sure have put a lot of time and effort into the wrecker section. Great choice of colours well done. Cheers John
Southgate Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Pret-tee sharp looking rig! I'd like to see some more pix, perhaps the engine and chassis? Thanks for sharing that. Dan
bitner Posted August 19, 2008 Author Posted August 19, 2008 Thanks for the nice comments guys. It's a project I've been contemplating for a while. It's got the stock 8V-71 engine under the cab. I'm still figuring out what kind of wrecker to do for a future project.
ABC Auto Industry Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Thanks for the nice comments guys. It's a project I've been contemplating for a while. It's got the stock 8V-71 engine under the cab. I'm still figuring out what kind of wrecker to do for a future project. What about an Autocar DC-64?
ns4ever Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 very nice truck. lookin good. for a future project, how about something military, or oilfield style, all wheel drive and great big wheels! andy-b-
Aaronw Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Very nice, I saw a similar 1-1 cabover wrecker in Lone Pine, CA a couple years back and thought it would be a neat project. There was also a 50's Ford N cab over wrecker still in service at another repair shop nearby.
The Modeling Hermit Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 It's back to the drawing board for me. I built one of these for a couple of years ago, but just made a day cab out of it. I then used the wrecker body as is. In other words I used no "imagination" on it. I've been dissatisfied with it ever since. I think it's time for some reworking. Thanks for the inspiration. That is a fantastic build.
SpreadAxle Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 You did a fantastic job on this wrecker. VERY NICE!!!!!!!!
broch Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 WOW!! This is a excelent build! Havn't seen anything like it! THink you have made the best COE with a wrecker body that I every seen.! Hope to se more great prosject like this from you!
Old Albion Posted September 7, 2008 Posted September 7, 2008 Bill, This is superb! A lot of imagination and hard work has obviously gone into this. Once again your scratchbuilding skills have produced a very differant and interesting truck. The colour looks great in the sun light. I always prefer photographing my finished trucks in the natural daylight. It really does make them set them off. Best Wishes Dave Bates
