The Story

The funeral was filled with many grieving people of all ages and many cops were there in a sign of support for Danny’s widow, Jenny.  The church hall had a reception after the funeral with all kinds of potluck dishes.  Many were homemade and some were store bought.  McNally attended the funeral and even got to talk with Jenny for about 10 minutes when she was whisked away by a family member to talk with someone in a wheelchair.  After another hour, he went outside because he thought the hall was getting stuffy and he wanted some air and to cool off.  In the parking lot, he sees Danny’s cousin, Bob, handing out beers from a cooler in the trunk of his car.

He doesn’t know Danny’s cousin, but he is handed a can of beer anyway.  Apparently, Bob knew McNally was Danny’s partner many years ago in the Burglary/Robbery Division of the Boston Police Dept.  He sees Lt. Det. Adam Troy talking to Lt. Det. Ferris of Burglary/Robbery Division drinking beers and he walks over to them and asks if they are duty?  The replies from Adam was , "I won't tell if you don't."  Lt. Ferris says, "Works for me," as he takes a swig of beer from the can.  Attorney Charlotte Rothmann comes over and takes McNally's can of beer and takes a sip from it and says, "I still can't get use to the taste of beer."

"It tastes better out of a bottle or on draft," says Adam.  They talk briefly about Danny and Jenny and the kids and how they will be benefitted by the Police Benevolent Association.  McNally finishes his beer and says goodbye to the two detectives and to Charlie.  He walks back into the Church Hall and says goodbye to Jenny and offers her his help to clean out Danny's belongings to which Jenny says she will call him.  He gets into his Dodge Challenger and drives home thinking about the good times he had with Danny.

McNally will return...
