Brendan Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 GM announces that the Factory Team will be switching to GT2 in 2010. And running a limited schedule in 2009. You can blame the ALMS for not bringing competition into the GT1 category. In Europe there are quite a few GT1 cars running. Here's a link to the article. http://www.americanlemans.com/News/Article.aspx?ID=4783 http://www.americanlemans.com/News/Article.aspx?ID=4784
ismaelg Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 (edited) Thanks Brendan! This is not surprising as there has been no other GT1 in the last 2 years. Last year at the Petit LeMans we talked a bit about it, and they told me it was a possibility. GO TEAM GO! Thanks! Edited September 12, 2008 by ismaelg
Nick F40 Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 THANK GOD!! Finally real competition for the Ferrari's and Porsches and have some real racing!!
CAL Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 THANK GOD!! Finally real competition for the Ferrari's and Porsches and have some real racing!! I think you have backwards.... Corvette will have some competetion.
Brendan Posted September 12, 2008 Author Posted September 12, 2008 Since it looks like there's not going to be a GT1 category much longer, they need to bring back the GT3 category. Make it so that the biggest motor that you have is a 6 cylinder and under 3 liters. Or a 4 cylinder turbo under 1.5 liters...like they used to have. Then make the GT2 the new GT1 category.

I'd be happy if they just went back to GT1 GT2 GT3 GTR
ismaelg Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 Remember IMSA in the mid 80's? That'd be cool GTP: Prototypes GTO: Over 3 liters (It was 2.5 then increased to 3.0) GTU: Under 3 liters GTS Special class event like all cars the same or something like that
CAL Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 (edited) It will be interesting to see what happens with all this. They, ALMS, said they were trying to get more GT1 cars and seem to have a growing list of potential new comers. I am not sure I like the Idea of Corvette in the GT2 with Porsche and Ferrari. I have the feeling that it will be a while for ALMS to figure out how to make a 5.5L V8 Corvette fairly competetive with a 4.0 Flat 6 Porsche. Look at the Pontiacs it seemed too little too late to make it a good championship in GT2. I hope they are not thinking that they have no competetion in GT1 in ALMS and not competitive at the 24 Hrs of Le Mans they drop to GT2 and clean house. I know they have been talking about picking up FIA rules, which are supposed to change next year particularly for the LMP1 and LMP2 cars. They need to do something though because the ALMS is starting to suck a$$. The Rolex series is so much better. If Ferry was around Porsche would probably drop out of AMLS - proably would have already. They jack around with it too much trying to field to many different cars that are light years apart in the same classes - V8 GTO or GXP, Mazda Rotary RX-8, Porsche 911 RSR and Ferrari 430GT Porsche is also getting a new car next year. Brendan Posted September 12, 2008 Author Posted September 12, 2008 Found another interesting article. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/70520 As for Grand Am, I think that it is a lot more boring than the ALMS. The only thing good about that series is the GT cars. The GT cars are technically GT3 category cars. The ALMS is already running under FIA rules. But they were able to allow some balancing of the classes in P1 and P2 to make them competitive with each other. After next year they won't be able to. The Corvettes in GT2 with their 5.5 liter will be on equal playing fields with the rest of the cars. The Panoz is already running a 5.5 liter. The new Porsches that are coming out will have the new chassis which they were going to run two years ago, but were told that it was going to be illegal. The Ferrari's chassis by definition is illegal because they are running a carbon fiber chassis. Porsche was told that would not be allowed.
Nick F40 Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 Brenden, Ismael, and Chris...OHHH YEAH!!! It will be interesting to see what happens with all this. Heck yeah man, that's why I love it, real competition with drivers AND cars! ehhh you already know that...
gregbbear Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 Rolex: good racing with gross cars. Some legacy driver's too. Names like Donohue and Gurney, and they are good in their own right. The DP's are just butt ugly though. I really like the ALMS though. There were some great Audi-Porsche battles this year. As for the GT1 class, it would have been nice for more competition, because I really like the class. It would have been sweet if Ford would've put a GT in the ring. I read somewhere that there might be some racing in FIA GT2 though. It would be nice if the Japanese would step up to the plate. Imagine GT-R, or an NSX racing the Vettes.... There was a really cool NSX that raced in the Speedvision GT, and it was cool! I can dream, right? How about Mustangs in GT2? Later, Greg
