Harry P. Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Ok, one more pro-Mac rave and then I'll be quiet. My "work" computer (a Mac, of course!) gets heavy-duty usage every single day. Huge graphics files (some nearly a gig in size!!!), several software programs up and running simultaneously, etc... "heavy duty" usage, for sure. It's 5-6 years old now and still running like a top. But one day... it started freezing and crashing, I was getting weird error messages, software programs wouldn't launch, etc. In other words, it was acting like a PC! So I took it into the local Mac store at the Woodfield mall here in Chicago. The tech began to look it over immediately...no "leave it here and we'll get back to you in a few weeks" BS... he did all sorts of tests and diagnostics. After about 20 minutes he told me what the problem was: the computer was fine, there was nothing wrong with it. The problems were being caused by a faulty third-party memory card I had installed. The card had actually "gone bad", with some sort of physical disconnect in the circuitry. When the tech removed the faulty memory card, my Mac worked just fine! After all that, I asked him what the charges would be. He said, "No charge!" His explanation: since there was nothing wrong with my Mac, he technically didn't fix anything. Even his time diagnosing and solving the problem was "no charge"!!! Now that's what I call customer service! I was sold on Macs before this incident, but after my experience at the Mac store, I'm an even firmer believer in Apple. A lot of other companies could learn a thing or two about customer service from those guys. And for the record...I don't own Apple stock, I don't work for Apple, and I don't know anyone who works for them or owns their stock. I'm just a very satisfied customer.

Maybe I just got lucky, I have been on some really bad PCs, or maybe because I built my own with carfully picked componets my PC runs like a Mac and I run a lot of graphics and NLE programs. I don't get errors, messages, conflicts, blue screens, shutdowns, lock ups, or any of the usual PC problems, and It is going to be 5 years old soon. (knock on wood). I came real close to moving to a Mac in 2003. I just didn't see three times more value in a Mac just three times more cost. I have no idea what the problems with the G4s I was using, it wasn't just mine but all 20 or so had some kind of regular problems - particluarly with locking up and crashing. The IT guys blamed it on the network and un-networked a bunch of workstation, but they still had issues. There just isn't isn't a big difference between them any more other than cost.
Harry P. Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Not really three times the cost. A bit more expensive, but not three times as much! Now their laptops, those are expensive. Especially that thin one that fits into an envelope! But I'm talking about a G4 tower. It's like the Energizer bunny.... it just keeps going.. and going... But hey, I'm old enough to remember when I did my job at a drawing table with illustration boards and Rapidograph pens and an airbrush. An apple was just a fruit, and Mac was what you called a guy whose name you didn't know!!!

Maybe an off the shelf unit isn't, but the custom built G5 equvilent of the PC I built was almost three times the cost. You must be an Old Guy. It's just like the VHS - Beta wars. Beta was better, smaller, had clear picture, but VHS won the marketing war. Now look almost no one even has a VHS player anymore. Some day there will be something completely different than PC or Mac that will blow both their doors off.
Harry P. Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 You must be an Old Guy. Hey man... age is just a number! Or, you're as young as you feel.... Ah, who am I kidding? I'm at the age now where I sit in front of the house and tell the kids to get off the lawn!!! It seems like just yesterday when I was one of those kids on the lawn!

I am not that far behind ya.
CAL Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 My daughter's iPod quit working the other day. All her millions of songs are on it..... of course. Me? I simply continue to spin my vinyl records on a 40 year old turntable with absolutely no problems and the sound is BEAUTIFUL. Technology is great but with it comes great problems and responsibilities.... There is actaully a resurgence of vinyl records. I read somewhere there was 400 million vinyl records sold last year, and the industry is expect it to grow expotentially in the years to come. I don't have a turn table any more but I have a bunch of OMRs.
Harry P. Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Yeah, vinyl is now cool again. What goes around, comes round, I guess! So will shag carpeting be making a comeback anytime soon???
Darrell Gwinn Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Well if vinyl is cool, i have a whole lot of 33's.... anyone interested?.. lol
Jello Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 I still use my XP program with great sucess( knock on wood..) and AVG protection program that works great after trying ALL the others. Virus killed my last 2 computers but my current one has outlived it all thanks to all that experienced I learned from the other two. I have no plans to use Vista on my next computer due to all the complains & problems others experienced with using Vista. I will upgrade the memory soon rather than buy a new computer. Some people may not be aware that they can buy computers without any programs such as Vista already installed which you have to download. Seems to me that all these new tech programs & stuff is just making us look more dumb & dumber every year huh? Yes, Vinyl is making a comeback and all that 'old' stuff keeps looking better & better! ~ Jeff
rollinoldskoo Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 This is a bit OT but still relevant as we all use our 'puters to come to this great place! I tried downloading SP1 about six times before I threw in the towel and called Microsoft. I got a very nice Indian girl (she was understandable) and must have spent TWO HOURS on the phone trying to sort this out. was she cute?
MrObsessive Posted September 19, 2008 Author Posted September 19, 2008 was she cute? She was asking me questions such as have I ever been to India, (Invitation?) and how was it here in the US. She sounded cute, but perhaps a bit too young for me (early 20's?). She spoke good english, and she picked up that by the way I spoke that I was from the northeast. She also said that the common language there is english because there are so many different languages and dialects from city to city, they speak mostly english to each other. I got her name but my oh my...........it's a looooong one!!
MikeMc Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Passport photo: Don't worry Harry he is on the TSA "list".......what kind of credit card does he use????
MrObsessive Posted September 19, 2008 Author Posted September 19, 2008 Passport photo:   Yikes!! That looks too convincing! Maybe I best NOT go there...............They may not let me leave!!
