HotRodaSaurus Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Hi all, a query about windshields here. I notice the new Revell chopped Merc comes with a single piece widshield but a factry stock unchopped car has a split screen. I also noticed that the Hirohata Mercury and also Louis Bettancourts and many others have chopped and butted windshields. Should this be a two piece flat glass sceen as in the AMT Trophy version or is it one of Revells custom options? Thanks, John
george 53 Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 John, A personal freind of mine,Bill Coates, Built the 49 Merc that sits in the Henry Ford Museum, In Dearborn Mich. named "Sweet'n Low". He used the stock windsheild, "VERY carefully cut" and butted the center ends, and sealed with silicone. He wouldn't use Lexan as he said the car was meant to see daily use(which it did, till he donated it to the museum) and normal wear an tear of daily use woulda ended up scratchin and messin up the looks of it. I don't know what other custimizers use, but, when done properly, his version show no signs of leaking or wear. And it still looks good!
HotRodaSaurus Posted September 25, 2008 Author Posted September 25, 2008 Thanks for the answers but I am confused because with a split front windshield, the frame is usually a very shallow V shape. To fit curved or flat glass would involve installing a new channel for the screen to fit in, real or model. The Revell Merc looks a fantastic kit but I prefer the split V screen look. Is the Revell windshield straight or curved? Thanks, John
george 53 Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 John, the Revell Merc has a sorta V'd one peice windsheild.Looks nice.
Tom Jackson Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 I put the split trim back on my merc and the rear window splits for a 49 I just used 1mm half round plastic strip

I haven't been buying many magazines since CR was cancelled but I'd bet the windshield company is still around. That was one of my Favorite Mags too, and Miss it alot(I liked CR more than R&C, cause they were open minded to any Kustom despite the year, where as until CR left, R&C snubbed their noses at anyting newer than a '64)! Anyways, I too remember seeing those ads in the back of CR, and R&C, so I'm sure they are still around.... From what I heard though, most of the Original 40's and early 50's Kustom's either had their Glasses V-butted and Silconed if they were drivers, with the "Show Cars" getting the Lexan treatment..... The Kustom Late 40's- Early 50's Chevies,Pontiacs,Buicks,Olds,Cadillacs were the easiest, as the 50's Buicks/Olds/Caddys all recieved one piece curved windshields that adapted fairly easy to the prior two-piece cars(GM's AD Trucks followed suit in '54, and the earlier trucks could be adapted as well).... When GM and Other Manufacturers started offering the One piece windshields and Rear windows in 1950, alot of the Kustomizers quickly adapted them to their cars, especially any new Kustom Chopped Merc... Killer Niner Tom !

jeffinvt Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 HotRodAsourus, another thing to think about with the revell kit is that an additional chop of the rear roof will improve it's looks dramatically. It has a bit of a high spot around the B pillar, which can be fixed with the most simple of chops. This can be done without changing the glass shape front and back. It is a great kit, and will produce a beautiful model. The fit of it's parts is the best I've seen...
