Lance Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 I'm building the Calsonic Skyline GT-R 2003 kit and one of the tire decals will not adhere to the tire. It's pulling up around the edges. Is Micro Sol safe to use on these kind of decals? I'm planning to spray with Dullcote but I'm afraid that will make the situation worse. Thanks.

What I've done in the past that works well is take some Tamiya's clear acrylic and brush it over the decal where it's lifting up and take a damp towel to dab and wipe the excess off. Give it a day to dry and then shoot your flat over the top. You can also use Future Acrylic Clear; just let it get tacky before brushing it on. Otherwise it can lift the rest of the decal off.

Never would have thought of either! Thanks a bunch. I'll hit the LHS tomorrow and pick up some Tamiya clear. As far as Future, I usually dip clear parts and brush to seal masks. So I'm not too sure on what tacky would look like (if there's no clear to buy). Let it set up on the brush for a few minutes?

I've used the setting solution on some of my tire decals and it has worked 4 me.

I let the Future sit out for about 5 minutes so the ammonia (I think that's it.) can evaporate a little bit. Ammonia will remove the decal. The problem with using Micro Sol is that it's meant for decals not dry transfers which the Tamiya decals are. If you have an airbrush, try to get tire stencils usually sold by after market photoetch producers. It gives a more realistic look.
Brendan Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 keep in mind too that the Tamiya tires are rubber. the Testors dullcote may dry down okay, but any flexing of the tire and it could peel and flake off or even crack up. the Future is going ot leave an unrealistic shine to the tire too, like it's been smeared with Armor All, which isn't something usually done to racing tires. maybe Tamiya can supply you with a replacemetn set of the tire decals? Dave If you used the lacquer flat clear, you shouldn't have any problems. I've done it in the past and have had good success. Another thing you could do is use an acrylic dull coat that somebody like Testors acrylic or any other water based acrylic as a sealer will work fine. As for the Future, he's using that as a glue to help keep the decals down and not having it as the finished product. If you wipe the excess off with a damp cloth after you tack it down, it won't be shiny.
Brendan Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 good points Brendan. i did have some similar trouble with some old Tamiya tire transfers, but it could have been my inexperience with using them too! could you post a link to some of the aftermarket stencils for the Tamiya tires? Dave That's one of the reasons I like the tire stencils better. Most of the stencils that I have are from photoetch sets for a specific car. Kevin at Strada Sports has some available, mainly Goodyear. I know there are others out there. Here's a link to Strada Sports, then type in tire stencils in the search box. If you can find the old Modeler's sets, they had a couple of different size stencils, but unfortunately Modeler's is out of business. Another company you could also check is Scale Motor Sports. Every once in a while a company comes out with a whole bunch of tire stencils and you have to get them right when they come out cause they usually sell out rather quickly. http://www.stradasportsstore.com/
Lance Posted December 23, 2008 Author Posted December 23, 2008 Got some Tamiya clear today and will give it a try hopefully tonight. Holiday traffic was insane. One hour to go about 10 miles round trip... Thanks again!
MikeMc Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 You can DULL Down Future by using Tamiyas "flat additive" ...check out the complete future article..it gives ratios! http://www.swannysmodels.com/TheCompleteFuture.html
