Dr. Cranky Posted January 15, 2009 Author Posted January 15, 2009 Of course, the idea is not to stress out about these kinds of graphics . . . a little overspray is actually a good thing because it give the build a hand-built (1:1 ratttle can job look!) or at least that's the story. There's more to come . . . more masking and more graphics . . . stay tuned in . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted January 15, 2009 Author Posted January 15, 2009 Okay, so I put the blue tape mask on and this is what it looks like: I realize that I could have been more exact in cutting my diamonds, but that would have required measurements . . . and well, you know how I get along with math!!! This is close enough . . . The wonderful thing about his blue tape is that it is extremely compatible with acrylic paints . . . does't lift or leave residue.
Dr. Cranky Posted January 15, 2009 Author Posted January 15, 2009 I sprayed white paint first over the black, then I mixed in some yellow, then orange, and finally I darkened it to red. This way the red didn't turn pink on me. Here are the results . . . I know I messed up in a couple of places with diamonds that don't connect, but hopefully this is where some well-placed rust spots might come in handy!!! I might also come back in and dot some gold where all the diamond tips touch . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted January 15, 2009 Author Posted January 15, 2009 I have to say it looks a bit too clean for my taste, but that will all change in the next few days . . .
Clay Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 Hi, Clay, thanks . . . I am using a faded sweep I picked up through Amazon.com . . . it's not a cheap sweep, but it does a beautiful job . . . and it's matte vinyl which can be cleaned with a little windex and water . . . I am guessing that a sweep is an actual photography back drop? I have to say it looks a bit too clean for my taste, but that will all change in the next few days . . . That thing looks awesome!!!!
evilone Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 This is going to be sweet bro i am going to have to watch this one to see how it turns out.
Custom Hearse Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 I like it Virgil! IT'S HOT!!!! IT'S COOL!!!! IT'S EVIL!!!! Your friend should market the webbing. I'd bet he'd make allot of money selling it. I also agree with Jairus, you definitely know how to make a presentation! I'll be keeping an evil eye on this one!
Dr. Cranky Posted January 16, 2009 Author Posted January 16, 2009 Thanks, chaps. I really appreciate the comments and the energy. I will have more progress tomorrow. I'd love to hit the bench tonight, but I am beat after a long day at work. Stay tuned in for more tomorrow.
Raul_Perez Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Very cool, Virgil...very cool indeed!! I think that the masking on the roof is perfect for the look that you're trying to achieve. It would look wrong if it were all perfectly proportioned and even. I can't wait to see the finished product!! Later,
Dr. Cranky Posted January 16, 2009 Author Posted January 16, 2009 Thanks, Raul, I hope to make some more progress today . . . I appreciate the comments. Stay tuned in.
CB Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 V, I think I like your presentation as much as I like your models! Great photography dude, keep it up. I gotta chime in on the kudos for your presentation as well Virg. Superb photography! Almost looks like you're PhotoShopping backgrounds in your shots. Another thought comes to mind tho, considering your builds: Looks like you are actually living in another dimension! hence your awesome creations!
Dr. Cranky Posted January 16, 2009 Author Posted January 16, 2009 Ha, I like that CB. Yes, I am indeed living in another dimension, it is called ###### Cranky's MIND!!! Stay tuned in for more progress . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted January 16, 2009 Author Posted January 16, 2009 I had to be brave this morning and try my hand at adding free-hand graphics to this build. I head my breath and went for it. I think it turned out pretty desent, I think. Here are some pics . . . of course, you can already see a huge chasm of departure between the orinal picture and this build. Sometimes your imagination takes you away from the germ of a good idea . . .
Jairus Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Actually, the hand lettering looks very good! There may be a future for your talents by hand lettering on slot cars dude.
Dr. Cranky Posted January 16, 2009 Author Posted January 16, 2009 Don't give me so much credit so fast, pardner!!! Those are actually Woodland Scenics circus style letters . . .I just did the little squiggles and devil's tail, that's all . . . and the other reason why I got into the pinstriping on there was because I didn't get the letters centered right . . . I figured I'd be able to trick the eye or something like that. How's that for a confession?
horsepoweraddict Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 WOW!!! This is an awesome build, can't wait to see the finished product.
Dr. Cranky Posted January 16, 2009 Author Posted January 16, 2009 Thanks, Brent, still trying to make some progress on this thing!!! Stay tuned in . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted January 17, 2009 Author Posted January 17, 2009 Okay, folks, here's some more progress . . . which has been slow, but I've had to do all sorts of painting tricks on this thing . . . then again, I'm not in a hurry to finish it. I am having too much fun with it. The headlight buckets and glass are in, and it took me a while to get the right look on the skulls by drybrushing them, and then painting the eye sockets blood-red!
Dr. Cranky Posted January 17, 2009 Author Posted January 17, 2009 I could not possibly leave the back without some sort of ornament, so I found this and think it works . . . I still have to add a few more touches to it, including the rear lights, etc . . . then it's on to the enging, interior and chassis . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted January 17, 2009 Author Posted January 17, 2009 Here's a link that will take you to all the skulls and bones you'd ever need!!! http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/...otCatGameStyle=

Don't be givin' away all yer secrets Virg! but thanks for enlightening us Them skulls are lookin' way cool, all drybrushed just so..........whatta ya think about little red L.E.D.s in the eye sockets ?
Dr. Cranky Posted January 17, 2009 Author Posted January 17, 2009 Thanks, buddy, yeah, I'd love to put LEDs on my builds one day, but right now it's the one thing that has always stumped me . . . I don't know anything about electricity and I've always been afraid of trying it . . . one day. I hope so. One day.
Dr. Cranky Posted January 17, 2009 Author Posted January 17, 2009 I'm finding some stuff that I would like to use on this build, but don't know where or how . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted January 18, 2009 Author Posted January 18, 2009 Here's some progress on the interior. I used the smallest of Craig Frasers skull templates to ghost some skulls and bones all over this interior . . . it's not really going to be seen, but I wanted to get them on there . . . I was really aiming for some contrast in all that dark interior . . . I also painted the firewall . . .
