Chrislols Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Hello, I'm starting working on an Enzo Ferrari (A Revell kit) As some of you might of seen it already, the body of it is white and I'm going to be spraying it Gloss Red. My only question is, should I prime it before hand?
Peter Lombardo Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 The rule of thumb, when in doubt, prime it. I prime every body I paint regardless of the plastic color or the top coat color. I fact, I prime the body (gray primer) then lightly sand to smooth out and get any cat hairs off it (I have a long hair cat that loves to inspect everything I do) then paint the body with a thin coat of white and sand lightly again, then the top color or colors go on.
crispy Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I do the same thing Peter does. No matter the type of body color or type of plastic I spray primer on it. Not only will this provide adhesion for the paint but you can also look for imperfections in the body such as mold lines and sink marks. If you just want to spray the body then you'd be best advised to use a spray designed for the models themselves. Tamiya and Testors come to mind initially. If you plan on airbrushing the car then primer is a must. Most of the time the guys here that are airbrushing are using a much hotter lacquer designed for automotive use. However with that said you could also decant your spray paint for airbrushing. Good Luck! Chris
