could one substitute a straight up old school windshield for the slanted back windshield without a lot of trouble  thanks guys

Yes, but in the kit with the V windshield (Duvall style) the bump on the top of the cowl has been removed. You’d need to add the bump back as well as some divots for the windshield stancions.

the pic is a stock style cowl for a stock flat windshield.
