D.Pack Posted October 9, 2023 Posted October 9, 2023 (edited) Hi all. My bodyshell colour coat, I have polished down to 12000 so I can lay some pinstripe decals. I then want to clear coat them and polish out the clear to 12000 again. The colour coat, at 12000 it will accept the clearcoat, or should be rougher at 6 or 8000? I'll be rattlecanning, so only one pressure setting. Edited October 9, 2023 by D.Pack
atomicholiday Posted October 11, 2023 Posted October 11, 2023 Really good question. I’ve heard both schools of thought on this. Should be interesting to see what others here think.
D.Pack Posted October 11, 2023 Author Posted October 11, 2023 Well, been viewing some Don Yost paint vids and he says no problems with clear over 12000. And my soft paint surface under a strong light, it does have micro scratches/ swirls or whatever they're called, so still enough 'tooth'.
bobss396 Posted October 14, 2023 Posted October 14, 2023 I did a stock car earlier this year, it was an old stalled build and I had to strip the old paint and decals off the body. I painted it with white lacquer, polished it to 8000 grit and went with toothpaste to polish it. SUPER smooth and I was proud. Onto the decals, I used some Polar Lights Leeroy Yarbrough decals... they all but slid right off the car. Got some JNJ decals, the same thing... back in the box it went. Maybe too smooth is not the way to go, will be watching this post.
