tuffone20 Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 I need to know what clear would be best to use over my Monte Carlo model which was airbrushed with the HOK that walmart had a while back? I'm sure it's been posted before and I'm sorry for not spend some time looking. Thanks!!

I'm sure it's been posted before and I'm sorry for not spend some time looking. Thanks!! I think the "best" one to use would be HoK clear that is compatible with your HoK paint. You sure can't go wrong by using the manufacturer's clear. You can get it directly from HoK, or Black Gold or at any well stocked automotive paint store. That said, you could also use most any of the automotive clears, like PPG, Dupont or Spies Hecker, also available at any automotive paint store. Alternately you could go to a friendly autobody shop and I bet they'd sell you a small bottle of clear and some reducer if you brought your own bottles. And if you have to use model paints, the Tamiya clear could be a good bet as would most of the other model paint clears.

Walmart " HOK" is not the same as REAL HOK..or thru Black Gold. That line of colors is not made any more...and it is NOT LACQUER!!! I would suggest Tamiya Acrylic clear (not TS13) or future..Give a shout out to Marcus..Helipilot16...He can tell ya all the poop!!

I'll let you know if anything happens to it but so far we are looking good!!! Thanks for the replies guys!

Okay...I guess I stand corrected. Didn't know that about the Wallyworld particular brand. But I do stand by my statement that you can't go wrong if you use the same clear by the same manufacturer of the same type of paint.
tuffone20 Posted March 20, 2009 Author Posted March 20, 2009 Guys thanks for all of the replies! That Camaro looks awesome!! Love that color. Kevin, lets see some of those paint jobs with that folk art clear!!! I don't think this one came out to bad.
old-hermit Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 I quit using clear coat awhile back after some compatibilaty issues. After paint I just pour Future floor wax over it. Best shine I've ever had on a model.
MR BIGGS Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 If you want the best shine and will go over anything you got to use Urethane . I use RM DIMONT but it cost a small fourtain. They also have some good less priced one's out there like USC, Five star or legecy. This is Urethane over HOK.

DAAAAM a week or two to dry . My clear drys to the touch in 6 hrs. and my HOK paint in minutes. Thank god for airbrush.
RodBurNeR Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Not trying to be obtuse to Anthony, but you can get a first rate shine out of cheap clear too. I almost exclusively use Dupli Color clears on every build. I also use a Black Gold polishing kit with 1:1 KIT Carnauba wax. By the time I have gone through the polishing cloth's, the clear coat actually looks like glass.....then I put the wax on to "bring it out". this one I did with Krylon Crystal Clear Glaze this is BEFORE any polish So with that said, you can do it without spending a lot of money....just gonna take a little patience and good ole' elbow grease.

It's all good bro. The only problem is I don't have to polish it. That how it shines on it's own.
RodBurNeR Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Yeah, but I am speaking "rattle cans" here lol If you airbrush...you will get a better result most of the time.
MR BIGGS Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Yeah, but I am speaking "rattle cans" here lol If you airbrush...you will get a better result most of the time. Thats why I try and make all my homies and fellow club members who use can, get off the baby bottle. and start using airbrush. I got most of them to cross over and they said they don't know why they havent did it years ago. Its a whole new world. But most still use the can cause it's Convenient.
tuffone20 Posted March 20, 2009 Author Posted March 20, 2009 Those are some very nice "show Off" photos guys!!!
RodBurNeR Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Those are some very nice "show Off" photos guys!!! Just trying to help
tuffone20 Posted March 21, 2009 Author Posted March 21, 2009 I know and they look AWESOME!! And I'm going to be sure to do what I can to get a model to come out the way you guys have.
Ben Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Ok, I need some addresses to send my bodies too! Those are some really beautiful paint jobs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
evilone Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 I will post mine on sunday thats when my photobucket is cleared from suspension.I guess i got lazy and didn't clean out all the old stuff and it went over my 25mb's .
old-hermit Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Just to prove my point that it doesn't take a lot of hard work and fancy paint to make a nice finish. Plasti-kote rattle can gloss black and Future floor wax. I didn't even polish it for the pic's.
Dr. Cranky Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 I've been using Dupont Spot Clear over my HOK paintjobs for several years with good results--or at least I think they are good results.
FujimiLover Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Is there some sort of magical rattle-can clear-gloss that works on ANY brand enamel paint? Some work well with others, and some don't, so was wondering if there was a universal one.
tuffone20 Posted March 23, 2009 Author Posted March 23, 2009 Well I got the Monte Carlo done in time for the club meeting and well see for yourself and how it turned out. And thanks for all of the help with the clear coat.
