Hi Gary - never used these rivets before.  Can they be applied over primer or do they need to be applied over a clear coat like regular decals?  In any event, lots of fiddly placement ahead of you and going to look great!

The video I watched suggested application over a primer finish was acceptable. In the past I have added a couple rivets over primer, after they dried (water application) I then applied primer over them , then painted. They are still on the truck. I think best application is to bare plastic then apply Micro Sol. I am going to do a test plaque with a row of rivets to verify they will stick to my primer.

That box is top drawer !

Thanks Jeff, don’t think I would build another box, way more challenging than I thought, one will be enough.

Nice! Will you put a glaze in the wood? Mahogany would look nice! ?

Yes, I have a woodworking shop in the garage and use multiple finishes. I have a wipe on finish that will darken the boards only a little. You can see the finish on this trailer.

JM, this is the recipe that was given to me by a very old woodworker. This finish works best with open grain wood (such as oak) or soft wood like balsa or pine, this finish will not work well with closed grain wood (such as maple). Makes one gallon

16ounces Tung oil

16ounces Boiled Linseed oil

16ounces Polyurethane Gloss

16ounces Special Walnut Stain, Minwax 224

i use a lot of balsa and wood from pop sickle sticks, this finish works well, looks worn.

Floor of delivery box wrapped up with a little weathering. The walls will not get the same finish as they don’t get as dirty, the walls will get a coat of clear polyurethane, will slightly yellow the plywood. IMG_2136.thumb.jpeg.f59e476ca16d3df74f4c72c7d5a7f872.jpeg

Paint will be typical white with the radius painted aluminum color. I am already having anxiety over getting those rows (about 35 rows) of rivets straight. Made up a test plaque to experiment With laying down straight rows of rivets and check adhesion. Got wait until these old hands are steady enough.

Can you pre-draw the lines for the rivets with a pencil or will that stay visible?

It would make it easier to apply them straight!

Going to do some experiments first on my plaque. Worried if I draw a pencil line, the rivet may not stick to the leftover lead. Also the rivet carrier will be wet and May wash or smear the pencil line. But gonna try it. Will also use an offset tape line and follow it. Let ya know what I learn.

Glad you’re doing the rivets, Gary….. if I was to give that a go , it would look like a four year old on Red Bull did it ! Best of luck with a difficult task. Just wondering what the rail road guys do? Is there a tutorial or any ideas on the Micromark Tools site by chance? You tube for an idea?

Yes, there are a couple good YouTube videos out there, I plan on watching them again. One video shows how to cut a row of rivets, how to wet them, how to make a strategic cut then pulling with these (forgot the name) to get a straight line. He made it look easy. We will see. IMG_2139.thumb.jpeg.e723ffb88079e2866c3ffc071a174637.jpeg

Good idea! You could stick the rivets next to the pencil Llne and then remove it but I think what you're planing on doing is probably the better solution.

Good luck! ?
