Back in the 1980's,

A then younger Mike Flynn was an employee of Pegasus Hobby in Montclare, CA. Mike soon noticed that customers would admire his personal builds dissplayed in the shop case for all to see. These customers would ask several questions, most of them pertaining to the various parts of his builds, in other words "where did & how did you..." and so on. Having noticed the need to de-mystify the parts he used, most of them ordered from the new cottage industries, he began to order extra parts from these vendors. Soon the walls of Pegasus Hobby were lined with photo etched & spun aluminum patrs from blowers to entire wheel & tire combo's.

In fact, it was Mike along with help from then partner Rick Hicks who came up with the idea to produce low rider wheels from old corvette hubcaps & Miatta tires. With this new explosion of parts also came many extra "how to" questions & the solution for that was a model car cruise night. The old tire kicking, I'll show you mine & run what you brung meetings soon became a success & the 3rd Saturday night event took on a life of it's own.

Both Rick & Mike parted ways with Pegasus Hobby & while we lost Rick , Mike still stops by to see & enjoy time with his former customers & friends. Last night, he did so for what may be the last time as Mike is moving to Washington state to join his son. It was great to see him again in his element & serveral old timers showed up to send him off. Now a local legend, Mike's contributions to the hobby & easy going humor have gone far beyond our boundries. I feel it safe to say that not only I, but many So. Cal. model makers will miss you Mike. Good luck, God's speed & look out Washington, you're getting a good one..!

I wish him luck in his new ventures. I never knew him, but since I used to build nothing but lowriders back when it was actually popular to do, I remember the stories and how to's from Lowrider Bicycle Magazine (no longer in production). If it was not for them times, there would have never been any decent looking wheels for lowrider modelers. Back before I ever heard of Model Cars Magazine and any others.... :( ...LRB was the magazine I looked for on the shelf. Half models and half bicyles. I remember exactly how the first wire wheels looked, and at the time they were very cool. I remember when guys put o-rings on wire hubcaps because not everyone had them. Before I saw any after market wires, I would shave my tires down really low and use the most "custom" looking wheels in the kit or that I might have from my parts box. Now days.....I am very glad we have so much available to us, I use only what I want to use because it's easy to get.
