Monty Posted April 22 Posted April 22 As you can tell from the title, I've got an AMT '65 Galaxie convertible kit. My intent is to improve the look of the windshield and vent windows, as the kit's one-piece glass would look heavy and inaccurate when viewing the interior. I'm thinking of using trimmed pieces of acetate for the vent windows, but haven't come up with a good idea for anything that will match the natural curve of the windshield, nor do I have access to a Vac-u-form. TIA for all helpful ideas.
mcs1056 Posted April 22 Posted April 22 I used Perfect Mold (Hobby Lobby) to make a cast of the exterior of the original windshield. I then cut a side off of a Pure Leaf iced tea bottle, and heated that with a gun to get it to start moving. As the bottle skin is pretty thin, I had my gun near the lowest heat setting, so a blow dryer might work. I heated it till it sagged a bit, then pressed it using the inner, waxed side of a milk carton to get it to fully conform until cooled off. Any wax residue can be rinsed off with Dawn & hot-ish water If you want something a bit thicker, the cylindrical section of a Coke or Pepsi bottle would work, too.
