B_rad88 Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 great job, but i really don't like the speakers in the rear shelf, they look fake! i am sorry to say it, but i thought that i would share my opinion! othrer than that, this is one excellent car! Brandon
FujimiLover Posted May 24, 2009 Author Posted May 24, 2009 The speakers are fake but it's better than nothing I suppose. Sorry I haven't been able to respond in the past three-four day's. My keyboard failed on my Thuresday morning, my dad just got home, and I got a brand new computer. So, I'm back up and running again. Thank you for your kind comments. I'll be buisy working on my new computer this weekend and probably wont' have time for the model for a while.
stevegt738 Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 This is looking real cool, sure is a lot of red . I built one of these about 10 years ago that i got from a swap meet for $5, missing the exhaust system and instruction sheet. Now i know how it should have looked.
FujimiLover Posted May 25, 2009 Author Posted May 25, 2009 Sorry guy's. I haven't been working on the 911 lately. Been having to much fun with my new Imac computer. All that's needed to finish the model is to work on the body. Need to decal it, clear coat it, paint the black trim, paint the tail lights, and stick the lenses and window in place. Also, the weather's been kind of crumby this weekend. We've had alot of rain which is a great thing it's making everything all green and beautiful and it keeps fire-danger down. But it doesn't do much good for painting. And when Dad's home I can't paint in the outer-workshop like I have been doing. He doesn't like me painting in there! So not much going on here!
FujimiLover Posted May 25, 2009 Author Posted May 25, 2009 Another cold rainy day. No chances of clear-coating and finishing the body. Plus sounds like Dad and I are heading out to California in the next few day's so the Porsche is on hold for a while. PLUS I'm still trying to figure out the stupid printer on my new Mac. I can't seem to get my Mac to print! As I said in the other thread, it'll scan no problem. But, it won't print. So, FYI, no updates on the Porsche except no updates till I probably get back from Cali', and Dad's on his way down to FL.
FujimiLover Posted May 25, 2009 Author Posted May 25, 2009 This is looking real cool, sure is a lot of red . I built one of these about 10 years ago that i got from a swap meet for $5, missing the exhaust system and instruction sheet. Now i know how it should have looked. Thank you for your kind compliments! And yes, there is a lot of red on this car. If you look back at the photo of the real car, you'll see it's got a lot of red in it too. So, I'm building this one to represent the real deal. If you still have your kit, I can scan you a copy of the instruction's manual. And which part of the exhaust system are you missing? Most could probably be scratch built. Tips are just tiny little aluminum pieces of tubing. But, I've also seen this car listed on ebay several times and that's where I got this one from.
stevegt738 Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 All of the exhaust was missing, so just stuck some 3mm Aluminium tube out the back. I'll post the pics up later.
FujimiLover Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 Just did some decal work and painted in the tail lights. Not sure when I'll be able to do the rest of it.
FujimiLover Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 I was about to put the door handles on and clear coat her, when I realized I almost forgot to touch up the bottom from where she was sitting on the cardboard! So, I painted the bottom and now that's going to have to wait and dry before any more work can be done. DOH! I dont' think this will be finished till I get back from California!
FujimiLover Posted June 2, 2009 Author Posted June 2, 2009 Sorry, no updates. The weather has been crappy this past week. We need the rain which is good, but it's been constantly raining and it's depressing weather. Have not had a chance to clear coat or do anything with the model since trying to get Dad ready to go. I've got a concern with the decal's I've already put on the body. Will they be fine till I get back since their not clear-coated? I'm worried that the decals will eventually dry up and wear off, "fall off" the model? What should I do to protect the body in the mean time? Anything, or leave it alone?
FujimiLover Posted June 2, 2009 Author Posted June 2, 2009 Thank you. Right now I only have two decals on the body. The emblem on the hood, and the badge on the rear. Both are specific to this model and can't be replaced unless I buy same exact kit. So far, both decal's are looking good and have been since they were put on over a week ago. I just hope they remain there till I get back and till I can clear coat it. I do not have Future, I just use Model Master's high-gloss clear coat. Fortunately, when I did the interior, it was clear coated and so all those instrument panels and speaker's are protected very nicely. I'm just right now concerned with the two decals on the body. I don't want to come back home from California to see that the decals have fallen off or something. I probably should not have added the decal's till I was closer to clear-coating. But at that time I didn't think it would be this long of a wait. So the question is, if their still good now, will they be just as good when I get back in two weeks time? And how can I best clean the dust off the body without harming the decals? Usually I would rinse off the dust, but that can wash-off the decals as well.
FujimiLover Posted June 3, 2009 Author Posted June 3, 2009 I am replying with iphone, so forgive me for errors. I did just that, I placed the Model in a box before I left. Right now in Glenwood Springs and ha a nice soak in the beautiful hot springs this morning. On our way to Provo Utah!
FujimiLover Posted June 16, 2009 Author Posted June 16, 2009 I miss being home and working on my Porsche! I hope the finish will be just as great as the others have been. I've noticed that when I painted the final few coats some dust/dirt have gotten on it, but unfortunetly, I've already applied the special decals for it. So, I'm not sure how to sand smooth the imperfections without risking the decals. Any suggestions? Or should I just leave it and finish it off with details, and clear-coat? I hope to be back home this coming weekend with a chance to finish it.
FujimiLover Posted June 26, 2009 Author Posted June 26, 2009 Well, I clear-coated her the other day. I have to say I'm not happy with the results. Too much dust and dirt got in the way as I didn't rinse it off before hand. I was afraid rinsing it off would cause the decals to come off and get lost in the sink. Would like to start over but not sure about stripping the paint. The red is enamel, but I think the clear coat is lacquer. At least that's what the cap says it is. Also, if I strip the paint, I'll destroy the decal's. The decals are special Koenig Special decals that are specific to this model. So, that's why I'm leaning towards getting another kit is for a new body. I'd post pictures of it, but I don't think you would be able to see the imperfections that I'm seeing up close and personal. So, sadly, this KS 911 is still on hold. This is some what bringing me down because the chassis and interior are absolutely perfect, beautiful, and gorgeous. I hate being so close to finishing, and having to take a step back to redo something. If anybody has any suggestions as to how to save the decals/strip the paint I'd appreciate it. Hate spending extra money "AGAIN" to finish one kit.
beefheart22 Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Yikes! I made that mistake once, a lacquer based paint over top of enamel... mine ended up looking like a dried lake bed afterward. Rule of thumb says lacquer goes on the bottom, enamel can go on top of it. Next time decals give you trouble, here's a couple things I do: Microset: bush onto the application area, apply decal, lightly press out the liquid with paper towel as you normally would, and then brush some more on top of the decal and leave it. The decal will tighten over that surface. Might give you enough bonding, or at least stick it there until you clear coat. Would get rid of some of the silvering too I bet. Dave's suggestion of sealing it on with Tamiya acrylic clear. I've used it to seal edges of decals that did not bond to satisfactory results by dipping fine tipped detailing brush in some acrylic thinner, putting a little bit of the clear on the tip and just outlining the edge of the decal. Polishing the surface area as smooth as possible will give a better surface for greater stick 'em too. That also eliminates most of your silvering right there as the decals can sit on more even surface. I've used Tamiya "Fine" compound to smooth out slight pebbling in my paint before applying decals. The 3M polishing compound is popular, but I've never tried it. For glass like finishes, I use the Tamiya 3 step: Course, Fine, Finish compounds. I've made paint jobs that looked like golf balls to [near] glass like finishes. Hope some of that is helpful. I'm still learning these things through trial by fire!
Corvette.Jeff Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Fuji, its coming along great, I've watched almost all of your builds since i came back here(about a week after you joined up) you do great work man, i only wish i could get my paint to look as good as yours does here's a little trick i use for painting body's, Get a can of spray paint and set the body on it where the cap touches the inside of the roof, or do the coat hanger thing like mentioned, you just gotta get those body's off that cardboard! we basically use the same technique in the auto body field, only we use rotisseries Especially when we are restoring someones car just a little tip
FujimiLover Posted June 26, 2009 Author Posted June 26, 2009 Thank's for the tip's. I do plan on building some sort of spray-stand some day. I've had another look at the paint and it's not that bad, just would rather have a silky smooth paint job than a spoted one. As for the laqure ontop or not, that wasn't the issue. The paint look's nice, it's just got a bunch of dust/dirt in the finish. And that's not what I'm happy with. The clear coat works well for me and it does make things nice and shiny, and it's easy to spray. I dont' know if I want to just finish it and let it be, or get another kit and get it's body perfect. I'll try and post pic's of the body the way it look's now and see what you guy's think of it. I just wish I had a dust-proof spray-booth for my models!
Perspect Scale Modelworks Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 Looking really good so far. Only one suggestion if I may, the red interior could use a coat of flat or satin clear to take down the shine a bit. Can't wait to see more pics of this build.
nascarfan Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 Thank you. As the paint dries, the red does loos it's high-gloss wet look. But that will be taken care of when I clear coat it with Model Masters Lacqure clear-gloss. Question, while the instructions calls for the chassis to be body-colored, which I've done, does the chassis get a clear-coat as well? Or should I not bother clear-coating the chassis? I'd seal it with clear just because that testors enamel stay's tacky for quite awhile after you spray it.
FujimiLover Posted June 27, 2009 Author Posted June 27, 2009 The interior is already clear coated, and the body has already been clear coated. I'm just not entirely sure I'm happy with the end result of the body.
FujimiLover Posted July 13, 2009 Author Posted July 13, 2009 I think I'm going to get another kit some time soon and re-do the body. I started masking off the body to paint the window trim and I got deep finger prints into the paint. How can this happen after this body has sat so long and has had weeks to dry! ARRRRRRRRGGGG! NOT HAPPY! I wasn't happy with the dirt and dust on it in the first place, now I've got ugly finger prints! I can't sand it away, I can't strip the paint off cause I'll loose the decals I put on it. I'm mad cause it has a perfect chassis and interior, and I just need a perfect body! So, this project is still on hold till I get a replacement kit for it.
B_rad88 Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 that sucks that your got finger prints in it! did you try to buff it out or polish it? and i only saw 1 more of those ks 911s!!!! it was ebay, and with shipping it would be like $30!
FujimiLover Posted July 13, 2009 Author Posted July 13, 2009 (edited) I'v seen a few listed on ebay, but have to wait till funds reach my account. I have not tried any of those methods for the same reason. I don't want to ruin the decals, but they have been clear coated. I'm just not happy with it so far, body wise. I'm also been more interested in those Autoscale bodies. Edited July 13, 2009 by FujimiLover
Corvette.Jeff Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 thats why i dont like decals they can ruin a perfectly good paint job
FujimiLover Posted July 13, 2009 Author Posted July 13, 2009 I think you misunderstood me. It wasn't the decals that messed it up. It was probably me being impatient in the first place with applying the decals, and clear coating it before sanding it back down smoothly. The decals were fine. I was attempting to mask off the body so I can paint the flat black trim around the windows. My fingers had left nice fingerprints on the sides of the model where it's difficult to sand off. I also don't want to strip the paint off for fear of losing those decals. So, it's just best that I get another kit and redo the body like I did with the Testarossa Competition. We all know how well that one went! LOL! I love it! Got all four cars sitting on nice little individual shelves. Will post pics as soon as I charge up my camera. Will need three more shelves for my other three KS models. So, the decals were never an issue. Just the paint work and my fingers.
