I would expect that the lights were used to illuminate the pit marker boards on a dark and stormy Le Mans night. Must have been useful sicne they were used on both the 1937 and 1939 cars.

Being red lights I believe they wouldn't illuminate enough to make the boards readable from a fast moving car. But take it with a handful of salt, I been wrong before. Just ask my wife...

She must have been talking to my wife!  There is that whole "red light /night blindness" thing, though it appears that the 39 car had a white light.
