I've started my next build. While waiting for paint to dry on my Gran Torino I was able to quickly jump ahead on this guy. The kit's falling together, and no major issues so far.

I think I'll do this one as a two-tone, factory stock- White and Springmist Green

Hey All,

Group question.

What colour should the engine block be painted? The instructions show the block as being red, but it looks from what I can find online that only the 223 I6 was red. The kit provided engine is a V8 which I believe should be painted black. Also, what colour would valve covers and the air cleaner  be? I've seen both black and gold for these.

Thanks!

Ok, cool. When I typed my question into Google for the '57 I was getting black for the engine block. From what you posted and what the kit instructions say it would seem red is the way to go.

I used the Bing search engine and asked "57 ford custom 292 engine color"

I can only go by the two different '57 Fords that I had owned in the past. The first was a Fairlane 500 Convertible that I bought from the original owners in the early '60's. The 312 engine was the Ford red with black valve covers with the Thunderbird decals that Ford liked to put on everything it seemed. The second one I bought as a going to work car from the second owner around '64 or '65. This one was the base two door just like the one represented by the Revell kit. The engine in that one was also the 312 with a single 4 bbl. and a 3-seed with O/D. Same engine colors as the convertible. At the time I was doing light mechanical repairs and general service on many different makes of cars working in a Union 76 station. What would often happen when major engine work or even an overhaul, was that engines would get repainted with whatever can of paint was handy, if they even got any repaint at all. I and most of the other guys I knew at the time did try and stay with OEM shades of paint but there were a few that just didn't care so an engine and most any other part could wind up being any color. Years later people stumble across an old car and think they have some rear optional engine because someone in the past painted it chartreuse.

Just depends on how important it is to you as to what color to paint the engine. Do it the way you want it and enjoy this great kit.
